How to Get to Playa de Grikos

Getting to Playa de Grikos is part of the adventure of visiting Patmos. The island, known as the 'Jerusalem of the Aegean', has no airport, which helps preserve its authentic and tranquil character. The most common way to reach Patmos is by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, an overnight journey that gradually immerses us in the slow pace of the Greek islands. There are also connections with other islands of the Dodecanese and Aegean, such as Samos, Rhodes, Leros, or Kalymnos.

Once in Patmos, we will disembark at Skala, the main port and nerve center of the island. From Skala, Playa de Grikos is about 4-5 kilometers to the south, a short and pleasant journey we can make in several ways:

By Public Bus

The local bus service is an economical and reliable option. Buses connect Skala with Grikos and Chora (the island's capital) regularly, especially during the high season. Stops are well signposted, and schedules are usually available at the port or hotels. It's an excellent way to mingle with locals and enjoy the scenery along the way.

By Taxi

For greater comfort and speed, taxis are available at Skala port. The trip to Grikos is short and the cost is reasonable, especially if we are in a group. It's a good option if we have a lot of luggage or prefer a direct, no-wait arrival at the Patmos beach.

Vehicle Rental

Renting a car, motorbike, or even a quad is a fantastic way to explore Patmos at our own pace. There are several rental agencies in Skala. With our own vehicle, we will have the freedom to visit not only Playa de Grikos but also other hidden coves, the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Chora, and the island's picturesque villages. The road to Grikos is in good condition and offers spectacular coastal views.

The Sand and Water

What captivates us most about Playa de Grikos is the perfect combination of its sand and waters. The ground type is mixed, composed of a pleasant blend of fine sand and small pebbles or cobbles. This particularity makes the beach very comfortable for walking and laying out towels, in addition to contributing to the exceptional clarity of the water. It's not the typical powdery sand, but a texture that feels natural and authentic underfoot.

The waters of Grikos Bay are simply spectacular: crystal clear, calm, and shallow, making them a paradise for bathing. The bay is well protected from the wind, which means we will rarely find large waves, making Grikos an ideal place for swimming in total safety and for children to splash around without worries. The water color ranges from a vibrant turquoise blue to a deep emerald, creating a beautiful contrast with the white of the sand and the green of the surrounding vegetation.

The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, inviting us to spend hours immersed in it. Underwater visibility is excellent, making it perfect for snorkeling, even without venturing too far out. Watching the small fish swimming among the rocks near the shore is a delight, a small window into the rich marine ecosystem of the Aegean. This Patmos beach is, in short, a treat for the senses.

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: Along much of the beach, we can rent comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas to relax in the shade and enjoy the Greek sun. This is especially convenient for those who don't want to carry their own beach gear.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Several beach bars and tavernas are located right on the shore or just steps away. Here we can enjoy refreshing drinks, coffees, ice creams, and delicious local food, from fresh seafood to traditional Greek dishes. They are ideal spots for a light lunch or a sunset dinner with sea views.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: The availability of freshwater showers is a big plus for washing off salt and sand after a swim. There are also clean and well-maintained toilets.
