How to Get to Playa de Gomati

Getting to Playa de Gomati is part of the adventure. Given its somewhat remote location in the north of the island of Lemnos, the most practical and recommended way is by car. We chose to rent a vehicle at the airport or in the capital, Myrina, which gave us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace.

From Myrina, the capital, the journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes, covering a distance of about 30 kilometers. The route takes us through picturesque villages and rural landscapes, offering an authentic glimpse of life in Lemnos. We must follow the signs north, passing through towns like Kontopouli. Once we approach the coast, the last few kilometers to the beach are on a dirt road, which, although passable with a regular car, requires a bit of caution. It is not a difficult road, but it is somewhat uneven, which adds a touch of authenticity to the arrival.

There is no direct public transport that reaches the beach, so a car is essential. Upon arrival, we will find an informal parking area where we can leave our vehicle free of charge. It is simply an open space next to the beach, which underscores the wild and undeveloped character of Gomati. This relatively simple access, combined with its pristine atmosphere, makes the trip completely worthwhile.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Gomati welcomes us with a generous stretch of fine golden sand, which is a delight underfoot. The quality of the sand is exceptional, soft and clean, ideal for long walks or simply relaxing in the sun. What impressed us most was how this sand transforms into imposing dunes, creating a desert-like landscape that contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. These dunes are a distinctive element of Gomati and make it one of the most unique beaches in Greece.

The waters of Gomati are, as expected in Lemnos, incredibly transparent and of a seductive turquoise color. The entrance to the sea is gradual, making it very comfortable and safe for swimming and splashing around. The clarity of the water allows us to easily see the sandy bottom, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a refreshing swim. Although Gomati is not known for its underwater rock formations or exuberant marine life, the pure quality of the water and the softness of the seabed make it perfect for a relaxing swim.

The combination of fine sand and crystal-clear waters creates an idyllic setting for a day at the beach. The feeling of spaciousness and the low number of visitors (especially outside the high season) allowed us to enjoy the beach with a sense of exclusivity. It is the kind of place where one can forget the world and simply be carried away by the natural beauty that surrounds them.

Services and Facilities

It is important to consider that Playa de Gomati is, by nature, a wild and relatively pristine beach. This means that services and facilities are limited, which is precisely part of its charm for those seeking to escape the crowds and overly commercialized beaches. We appreciated this authenticity, although it is always good to be prepared.

In terms of services, we will find an informal parking area right next to the beach, where we can park the car without any issues. During the summer months, especially in the high season (July and August), there is usually a small seasonal kantina or chiringuito. This basic chiringuito offers refreshing drinks, some snacks, and perhaps some simple food, like sandwiches or salads. Do not expect a luxury restaurant, but rather a supply point to quench thirst and light hunger. It is a very welcome service given the beach's distance from any town.

What we will not find are showers, organized public toilets, or permanent lifeguard services. There is also no rental of sunbeds and umbrellas in the traditional sense. If we desire shade or a comfortable place to sit, it is advisable to bring our own umbrella, large towels, or a mat. The philosophy of Gomati is that of a natural beach, where human intervention is minimal. This contributes to its atmosphere of relaxation and its classification as a wild beach.
