Strategically located on the Adriatic coast, just a few kilometers south of Durrës and relatively close to the capital, Tirana, Golem has established itself as a magnet for local and international tourists seeking to enjoy the sun, sea, and a welcoming atmosphere. It is undoubtedly one of the beaches in Albania that best represents the essence of a relaxed and lively vacation.

When we think of a beach getaway, we often picture kilometers of soft sand, warm and shallow waters, and a wide range of services that make our stay comfortable and carefree. Playa de Golem more than meets these expectations. Its profile is that of an extensive and well-developed beach, perfect for families with young children, couples seeking a sunny break, or groups of friends wanting to combine relaxation with a lively atmosphere. Here, the Adriatic welcomes us with its characteristic calm, inviting us to immerse ourselves in its crystal-clear waters and enjoy the sea breeze.

How to Get to Playa de Golem

Getting to Playa de Golem is relatively easy, given its excellent location and Albania's transport infrastructure. Although the reference municipality/city in this profile's context is Tirana, it's important to clarify that Golem is located in the coastal region of Durrës, being a very popular destination for inhabitants of the Albanian capital.

From Tirana

If we are coming from Tirana, the capital of Albania, the journey is direct and comfortable. The approximate distance is about 40-50 kilometers, which translates into a trip of about 45 minutes to an hour by car, depending on traffic. We will take the SH2 highway towards Durrës. Once near Durrës, we will follow the signs to Golem or the southern coastal area.

• By car: This is the most flexible option. There are several car rental agencies in Tirana, both at the airport and in the city center. The road is in good condition and well signposted.
• By bus: There are regular bus and minibus lines (known as 'furgon') connecting Tirana with Durrës. From Durrës, it's easy to take another 'furgon' or a local taxi to take us directly to Playa de Golem. Frequency is high during the day.
• By taxi: A more comfortable, though more expensive, option. We can negotiate the price with the driver before starting the trip.

From Durrës

For those already in Durrës, Playa de Golem is only about 10-15 kilometers to the south. Access is very easy:

• By car/taxi: A short trip along the coastal road will take us directly to the beach.
• By local bus/furgon: There is a regular public transport service connecting the center of Durrës with the different beach areas, including Golem.

The Sand and Water

One of the most attractive features of Playa de Golem is, without a doubt, its sand and waters. We are faced with a beach of fine sand, golden in tone and very pleasant to the touch. It's the kind of sand that invites you to walk barefoot, build sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spread out a towel and enjoy the sun without worrying about rocks or uncomfortable pebbles. The expanse of sand is considerable, which means that, even in high season, we don't feel crowded and can always find a good spot to settle.

The predominant type of ground is, as already mentioned, sand, both on the surface and on the seabed. This contributes to the waters being very clear and, even more importantly, very shallow over a large area. We can walk several meters into the sea and the water will barely reach our waist, making it a paradise for children and those who are not comfortable in deep water. The water temperature in the summer months is exceptionally pleasant, warm and tempting, inviting long swims and refreshing dips.

The calmness of the Adriatic waters in this area is another plus. We will rarely find big waves or strong currents, which reinforces the feeling of safety and calm. It's a perfect place for swimming, floating, and simply relaxing while the sun caresses our skin. The transparency of the water allows us to see the sandy bottom, adding a plus to the bathing experience.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Golem is a beach characterized by its excellent range of services, designed to offer visitors a complete and worry-free experience. From the moment we set foot on the sand, we notice we are in a place well-prepared for tourism.

Among the essential services we will find, we highlight:

• Sun umbrellas and sunbeds: All along the beach, numerous operators offer rental sets of an umbrella and two sunbeds at very reasonable prices. This allows us to enjoy shade and comfort without having to carry our own equipment.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: The gastronomic offer is vast and varied. Dozens of chiringuitos and restaurants line the promenade and beachfront. We can enjoy everything from a quick snack or a refreshing drink to a full meal with local and international specialties.
• Parking: Given the influx of visitors, there are ample parking areas, both paid and free on adjacent streets, although the latter can be harder to find in high season.
• Showers and Toilets/WCs: Essential for comfort at the beach, we will find points with showers to rinse off salt and sand, as well as public toilets or those in the hospitality establishments themselves.
