How to Get to Playa de Gjiri i Ariut

We always say that the best-kept treasures usually require a little extra effort to be found, and this is the case. This cove is located between the popular beaches of Palasë and Dhërmi, south of the city of Vlora. The most common way to access it is by road, although you should be prepared for a final stretch that can be a bit challenging.

Road Access

From Vlora, we'll take the SH8 heading south, crossing the impressive Llogara Pass, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the coast. After descending from the pass and passing Palasë, we'll look for a turnoff towards the coast. The path to the cove is usually unpaved and can be in variable condition, so we recommend a 4x4 vehicle or, at least, one with good ground clearance. Parking is usually informal, in a clearing at the end of the road, from where we'll have to walk a short downhill trail to reach the sand. It's important to wear comfortable and appropriate footwear for the hike.

Access by Sea

For those who prefer a more relaxed experience or simply want to avoid the land route, access by sea is an excellent option. During the high season, it's possible to hire boat tours from the nearby beaches of Palasë or Dhërmi. These tours not only take us directly to the cove but often include stops at other beaches and sea caves in the area, offering a unique perspective of the coast. It's a fantastic way to arrive and enjoy the landscape from the sea.

The Sand and Water

One of the most captivating aspects of Playa de Gjiri i Ariut is undoubtedly the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. We, as beach experts, always look for that perfect combination, and here we find it in spades. The beach is characterized by having a mixed sand type, meaning it's not exclusively fine sand, but rather a mix with small pebbles and stones polished by the sea. This gives it a rustic and natural character and makes the water incredibly clear, as the sand isn't easily stirred up by the wave movement.

The waters of the Ionian Sea at Gjiri i Ariut are of astonishing beauty. Their color ranges from an intense blue in the depth to a vibrant turquoise in the shallower areas, creating a spectacular contrast with the white of the pebbles and the green of the surrounding vegetation. Despite its somewhat 'wild' character and relative isolation, Playa de Gjiri i Ariut is not completely devoid of services, although it's important to consider that these are basic and are usually seasonal, operating mainly during the summer months (from June to September). We always recommend going prepared, but it's good to know we won't be completely alone.

During the high season, it's common to find:

• Sun umbrellas and sunbeds: Local operators usually set up a limited number of umbrellas and sunbeds that can be rented for the day. This is ideal if we don't want to carry our own equipment and desire a bit of shade and comfort.
• Chiringuitos: Usually, there are one or two small chiringuitos or beach stalls. These offer refreshing drinks, water, and sometimes simple snacks or fast food like sandwiches or salads. Don't expect an extensive menu, but rather the basics to get through the day. It's a good place to have a coffee or a cold beer while enjoying the views.
• Parking: As mentioned in 'How to Get There', the parking is informal and is located at the top of the trail leading down to the beach. It's not a supervised or paved parking lot, but rather a space set up in nature. It's advisable to arrive early in the high season to secure a good spot.
