For us, it epitomizes what we seek when exploring Albania's beaches: virgin beauty, immaculate waters, and a sense of discovery.

Located on the Ionian coast, south of the city of Vlora and more specifically near Himarë, this cove is a testament to the incredible biodiversity and pristine landscapes still preserved in the Mediterranean. Its waters are so transparent that, even without diving in, we could easily distinguish the rocky bottom and the marine life teeming beneath the surface. It's as if nature created an infinite pool of turquoise and emerald hues, inviting us to dive in and forget the outside world. How to Get to Playa de Gjiri i Akuariumit

Getting to Gjiri i Akuariumit is part of the adventure, and this is precisely what contributes to its wild charm and exclusivity. Don't expect to find clear signage or a paved road leading directly to the shore; this cove is a well-kept treasure, and accessing it requires a bit of planning and, often, an exploratory spirit.

Access by Sea

The most popular and, for many, the most recommended way to reach Gjiri i Akuariumit is by sea. We chose this route, and the experience was unforgettable. There are several options for this:

• Boat Tours: From nearby ports like Himarë, Porto Palermo, or even Dhermi, numerous boat tours are organized that cruise the coast and stop at coves inaccessible by land, including Playa de Gjiri i Akuariumit. These tours usually last half a day or a full day and include time for swimming and snorkeling. It's an excellent way to see the coast from a different perspective and enjoy the comfort of an organized trip.
• Renting Boats or Kayaks: If you prefer a more independent experience, you can rent your own small boat (often no license is required for low-power vessels) or kayaks in Himarë. This gives you the freedom to explore the coast at your own pace, stopping at the coves you like best. It's important to have prior experience if you choose a kayak, as sea conditions can change.

Access by Land (Challenging)

Although it's not the main or easiest method, it is possible to get near Gjiri i Akuariumit by land, though the final access to the beach is very difficult and not recommended for everyone. The roads leading to the area are secondary, sometimes unpaved, and with sections in poor condition. From the main SH8 highway, which runs along the Albanian Riviera between Vlora and Sarandë, there are turnoffs towards the coast that can bring you closer. However, the last stretch to the cove usually involves steep, rocky trails, not suitable for people with reduced mobility or families with small children. We honestly don't recommend it. The magic of this Vlora beach lies in its isolation, and access by sea underscores that feeling of exclusivity.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Gjiri i Akuariumit is not the typical fine, golden sandy beach one might imagine. Its charm lies precisely in its uniqueness. Here, the ground is a fascinating mix of pebbles polished by the sea, small stones, and some stretches of coarse, mixed sand. This combination gives it a very natural and wild appearance, far from the more crowded and urbanized beaches. Walking along the shore, we noticed the texture under our feet, a different and pleasant sensation that connected us even more with the surroundings.

But if the shore is special, the real spectacle begins where the sea meets the land. The waters of Gjiri i Akuariumit are, without exaggeration, among the clearest and most transparent we've seen in the Mediterranean. The name 'Aquarium Bay' is no coincidence; the visibility is astonishing, allowing us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity, even at several meters deep. The colors range from a deep blue in the deeper areas to a vibrant turquoise and emerald near the shore, creating a chromatic gradient that is a delight for the eyes.

The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, inviting long swims and immersion in its coolness. The absence of large waves and strong currents makes it a calm place for swimming, although one must always be attentive to sea conditions. For snorkeling enthusiasts, this place is an absolute paradise. The richness of marine life, the colorful fish hiding among the rocks, and the underwater formations make every dive a new adventure. We brought our own snorkeling gear and spent hours exploring this natural 'aquarium', marveling at the underwater beauty of this Albanian beach.
