How to Get to Playa de Gidaki

Getting to Playa de Gidaki is part of the adventure and, honestly, is what keeps it so special and uncrowded. There is no direct road to its shores, which means we have to choose between two main options, each with its own charm and challenge.

By Boat

The most common and, for many, the most comfortable and scenic way to reach Gidaki is by sea. From the picturesque port of Vathy, the capital of Ithaca, small water taxis operate, taking us directly to the beach. These boats usually run regularly during the high season, offering flexibility for the trip there and back. The journey is short, about 15-20 minutes, and provides us with spectacular views of the coast and the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. It is also possible to rent our own boat in Vathy or other nearby ports if we prefer to explore at our own pace. This option is ideal if we are traveling with young children or simply want a relaxed arrival.

On Foot (Hiking)

For hiking enthusiasts and those seeking a more immersive experience, there is a trail leading to Gidaki. This path starts near Playa de Skinos, a more accessible beach east of Vathy. The trail is of moderate to high difficulty, with some steep and exposed sections, so we highly recommend wearing proper footwear (not flip-flops), plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. The hike can take between 45 minutes and an hour (one way), depending on our pace and fitness level. The views along the way are impressive, rewarding us with spectacular panoramas of the sea and coast. However, it is not a path for everyone, and we must be prepared for the effort. For us, the reward of reaching Gidaki after the hike was even greater, feeling like we had 'earned' our spot in this paradise.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Gidaki, we cannot help but marvel at its unique characteristics. Here we will not find the typical fine, golden sand that many associate with Greek beaches. Instead, Gidaki welcomes us with a blanket of white pebbles and small stones, polished by the sea over the centuries. These pebbles not only give the beach a distinctive texture but also contribute to the incredible clarity of the water. The absence of fine sand means the water remains pristine and sediment-free, even when there is a bit of swell.

The Turquoise Waters

But it is the water of Gidaki that truly captivated us. Its shades of turquoise and emerald blue are simply mesmerizing, a visual spectacle that few places in the world can match. The transparency is such that we can see the seabed with astonishing ease, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling. When we dive in, we feel the water envelop us with its coolness, offering welcome relief under the Mediterranean sun. It is a truly purifying and revitalizing experience. The combination of the white pebbles reflecting the sunlight and the depth of the sea creates a color palette that seems taken from a postcard. For us, swimming in these waters was like floating in a dream, a feeling of peace and wonder we will not easily forget.

Services and Facilities

One of the reasons Playa de Gidaki has retained its pristine charm is the relative scarcity of services and facilities. This is precisely what makes it an ideal destination for those seeking an escape from more commercialized and developed beaches. However, it is important that we go prepared.

During the peak summer season (July and August), it is common to find a small chiringuito or seasonal snack bar offering refreshing drinks, some snacks, and occasionally the possibility to rent umbrellas and sunbeds. These services are basic and operated informally, which contributes to the relaxed and authentic atmosphere of the beach. There may not be permanent toilets or showers, so we must plan accordingly.

Our recommendation is to always bring our own supplies: plenty of water, something to eat, towels, sunscreen, and anything else we might need for the day. Do not expect to find formal shops or restaurants on the beach. The beauty of Gidaki lies in its simplicity and the fact that it allows us to disconnect completely. For us, the absence of major infrastructure was a blessing, allowing us to enjoy nature in its purest state.
