How to Get to Playa de Gialiskari

This gem is located a short distance from Paleochora, a picturesque coastal village in southwest Chania, Crete. The most common and recommended way to get there is by car, which gives us the flexibility to explore at our own pace and enjoy the stunning Cretan landscapes.

By Car from Chania

If we depart from the city of Chania, the journey to Gialiskari is approximately 75 kilometers, which translates to a trip of an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic and the stops we make to admire the views. The route takes us along well-maintained roads, winding through olive groves, small villages, and imposing mountains. We always recommend renting a car at the airport or in the city of Chania for maximum comfort. Once we reach Paleochora, Playa de Gialiskari is about 5 kilometers to the east. There are signs that guide us in this direction, and the final stretch is a track that leads directly to the beach.

Parking at Gialiskari

Upon arriving at Playa de Gialiskari, we will find a designated parking area. It is not a formal, paved parking lot, but rather an earthen space next to the beach where vehicles can park for free. We always advise arriving early, especially during the high season months (July and August), to secure a good spot, as, although the beach is not usually crowded, the parking space can fill up. From the parking area, access to the sand is direct and very simple, making it easy to arrive with all our beach gear.

Other Transport Options

Although the car is the preferred option, it is also possible to reach Paleochora by bus from Chania. Buses operated by KTEL Creta run regularly and offer a comfortable and economical service. Once in Paleochora, the most practical option to get to Gialiskari would be to take a local taxi or, if we feel energetic, take a pleasant walk of about an hour along the coast. We have enjoyed this walk on occasion, as it allows us to appreciate the beauty of the coastline and discover small secret coves along the way. However, for most travelers, the car remains the best alternative for a hassle-free visit to this wonderful Chania (Crete) beach.
