How to Get to Playa de Garbet

Getting to Playa de Garbet is part of its charm and the reason it maintains its almost wild character. We always recommend going by car, as it's the most comfortable way to get there. From Colera or Llançà, the road is winding and offers spectacular views of the coastline. It's important to know that the final access to the beach is via a slightly narrower and sometimes unpaved road that descends to an area where you can park.

There is a designated parking area, although in high season, especially on weekends in July and August, it can fill up quickly. Our suggestion is to arrive early to secure a good spot. From the parking lot, it's a short walk, sometimes with a few steps, down to the sand. It's a short journey, but just 'hidden' enough to deter the crowds and preserve the tranquility that so characterizes this Colera beach. For us, the feeling of 'discovering' this place after the walk is part of the magic.

The Sand and Water

When you step onto Playa de Garbet, the first thing you notice is its sand. It's not the fine, white sand we're used to in other areas of the Mediterranean; here, the sand is coarse and golden in tone, giving it a very natural and authentic appearance. It's comfortable for lying on, although some prefer a good towel or mat for extra comfort. The mix of sand and small pebbles in some areas gives it a unique character, inviting us to explore every corner.

But if there's one thing that truly captivates us about Playa de Garbet, it's undoubtedly the quality of its waters. They are crystal-clear, with a palette of colors ranging from light turquoise at the shore to a deep blue further out. The visibility is excellent, making it a paradise for snorkeling lovers. The underwater seafloor type is mixed, with sandy areas alternating with rocks and posidonia seagrass meadows, creating a vibrant marine ecosystem. In the summer months, we find a charming chiringuito right on the beach. This establishment becomes the social heart of the place, offering refreshing drinks, ice creams, and often simple but delicious dishes to eat with your feet in the sand. It's the ideal place for a morning coffee or to enjoy a cold beer while watching the sunset.

In addition to the chiringuito, the beach has lifeguard service during the high season, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we're with children. We also have basic showers to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home. As mentioned earlier, there is a parking area, although its capacity is limited. It's important to note that it's not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure, which is precisely what we seek. You won't find large hotel complexes or shops right on the beach, and that's part of its charm and what keeps it as one of the most authentic Girona beaches.

Best Time to Visit

We, as experts and lovers of the Costa Brava, always say that the best time to visit Playa de Garbet depends on what you're looking for. If your main goal is absolute tranquility and enjoying the beach almost exclusively, spring (May and early June) and early autumn (September and October) are undoubtedly the ideal months. The weather is mild, the waters are still pleasant for swimming in autumn, and the number of visitors is minimal. It's the perfect time for a walk, reading a book, or simply listening to the sea uninterrupted.

If, on the other hand, you prefer the summer heat and a slightly livelier atmosphere (though never as crowded as other beaches), July is an excellent option. The water is at its optimal temperature and the chiringuito is in full operation. August, although also very pleasant, is usually the month with the highest number of visitors, so if you're seeking maximum peace, it might be better to avoid it or visit early in the morning. For us, spring and late summer offer the perfect combination of good weather, warm waters, and an unmatched serenity at this Colera beach.
