Known locally as the 'Roman Baths' or 'Sliema Baths', this bathing area is famous for its rock-carved pools, which fill and empty with the tides, creating perfect spaces for a safe and refreshing dip.

How to Get to Playa de Fond Għadir

Getting to Playa de Fond Għadir is relatively straightforward, given its privileged location on the Tas-Sliema seafront, one of Malta's most central and well-connected areas. We recommend several options, depending on your preferences and starting point.

By Bus

Public transport in Malta is efficient and covers much of the island. From Valletta, the airport, or any other major town, you'll find numerous bus lines that will take you directly to Tas-Sliema. The stops closest to Fond Għadir are just a few minutes' walk from the lido. For example, lines that run along the Sliema seafront, such as 13, 13A, 14, 16, or 21, will drop you off very close. It's an economical option and allows us to enjoy the scenery during the journey, avoiding the stress of parking.

On Foot

If you are already in Tas-Sliema or neighboring St. Julian's, walking to Playa de Fond Għadir is one of the most pleasant options. The lido stretches along the seafront promenade, known as Triq ix-Xatt, which connects both localities. A stroll along this area is an experience in itself, with shops, cafes, and beautiful sea views. From the center of Sliema, it will only take you about 10-15 minutes on foot.

By Car

For those who prefer the comfort of their own vehicle or a rental car, arriving by car is possible, although parking in Tas-Sliema can be a challenge, especially during the summer months. There are some on-street parking areas (often paid or with time restrictions) and private underground car parks. We advise you to look for parking in advance or consider leaving the car in a less crowded area and using public transport or walking for the rest of the journey. As we've already mentioned, Playa de Fond Għadir is not a sandy beach in the conventional sense. Instead, what we find is a fascinating landscape of limestone rock that has been shaped by nature and, in part, by human hands, to create a series of pools and bathing platforms. This feature is precisely what gives it its unique charm and popularity.

The Natural Rock Pools

The ground of this particular 'beach' is, therefore, mainly rock. Along the coast, you'll see the famous excavated pools, some of them quite large, which fill and empty with the waves of the Mediterranean. These pools are perfect for those seeking calm, shallow waters, ideal for children to play safely or for adults to relax without worrying about currents. Access to the sea from these rocky platforms is via stairs or designated access points, making bathing easier despite the absence of sand.

Water Quality

What undoubtedly impressed us about Playa de Fond Għadir is the incredible clarity and cleanliness of its waters. The Mediterranean here is a deep turquoise blue, and underwater visibility is excellent, making it a fantastic spot for snorkeling. Although it doesn't have the Blue Flag, the water quality is consistently good, allowing us to enjoy a refreshing and safe swim. The absence of sand helps the water remain crystal clear, without the turbidity sometimes associated with sandy beaches. However, we recommend bringing water shoes or aqua socks for greater comfort when walking on the rocks and entering the sea, especially if you're not used to this type of terrain.

We were pleasantly surprised by the available offerings, making it a very practical option for spending the day.

You'll find Showers distributed throughout the area, which is essential for rinsing off the salt after a refreshing swim. There are also public and private Toilets/WCs nearby, ensuring hygiene and comfort. For those arriving by car, although parking in Tas-Sliema can be tricky, there are paid underground Parking options nearby.
