How to Get to Playa de Fodele

Getting to Playa de Fodele is relatively straightforward, and the options vary depending on our starting point and preferences. If we fly into Heraklion International Airport (HER), which is the most common, we have several alternatives to reach our coastal destination.

By Rental Car

For us, the most comfortable and flexible option for exploring Crete and getting to Fodele is undoubtedly renting a car. From Heraklion airport, the journey takes approximately 25-30 minutes, covering about 25 kilometers. Simply take the national road E75 heading west, following the signs towards Rethymno/Chania. The exit for Fodele is well signposted. The car allows us not only to reach the beach easily but also to explore the charming surrounding villages and tourist attractions at our own pace. Furthermore, the Heraklion (Crete) beach in Fodele has ample parking areas, which makes visiting very convenient.

By Bus

If we prefer not to drive, public transport is a viable, though less direct, option. From the central bus station in Heraklion (KTEL), there are regular services connecting Heraklion with Rethymno and Chania. We need to look for a bus that passes through Fodele. It's important to confirm with the driver or at the station that the bus will make a stop in the beach area or in the village of Fodele, from where we could take a short taxi or walk to the coast. Schedules can vary, especially outside the high season, so we recommend checking the KTEL Crete website or asking at the station in advance.

By Taxi or Private Transfer

Another comfortable alternative, especially if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group, is to take a taxi directly from the airport or from Heraklion. The cost will be higher than the bus or rental car, but it offers the advantage of immediacy and door-to-door service. We can also arrange a private transfer in advance, which ensures someone will be waiting for us upon arrival and will take us directly to our accommodation or the beach.

The sand of Fodele is simply exquisite. We encountered fine, soft sand, of a pale golden hue that invites walking barefoot and laying out a towel to enjoy the sun. Unlike other beaches with pebbles or rocks, here the type of ground is predominantly sand, making it extremely comfortable both for adults seeking to relax and for children wanting to build sandcastles without difficulty. The absence of sharp stones or uneven surfaces underfoot contributes to a feeling of well-being and safety, an aspect we greatly value, especially when traveling with the little ones.

Crystal-Clear and Calm Waters

But if the sand conquered us, the waters of Fodele stole our hearts. The waters of the Aegean Sea in this bay are of astonishing transparency, with shades ranging from the lightest turquoise blue near the shore to a deeper blue as we venture further out. The visibility is excellent, allowing us to admire the seabed without the need for diving goggles. This clarity is a testament to the cleanliness and care of the environment, an aspect reinforced by the presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the high quality of the water and the beach's services.
