Introduction
If there's a place in Greece where time seems to stand still and authenticity is felt in every corner, that's Ikaria. And in the heart of its northern coast, we find Playa de Evdilos, a simple yet deeply evocative gem. Located right next to the main port of the same name, this beach is not just a beautiful stretch of coastline, but also the gateway to a lifestyle many of us dream of: relaxed, connected with nature, and with deep-rooted tradition.
When we arrive at Playa de Evdilos, the first thing that captivates us is the combination of the tranquility of its waters with the friendly bustle of a port town that remains true to itself. Don't expect large resorts or noisy crowds here; instead, you'll find small tavernas with a taste of the sea, local people sharing their daily lives, and a welcoming feeling that makes us feel at home from the very first moment. It's a place where the Aegean Sea invites us to dive into its crystal-clear waters and leave behind the stress of modern life.
How to Get to Playa de Evdilos
Getting to Playa de Evdilos is relatively easy, as the village of Evdilos is one of the two main ports on the island of Ikaria. The most common way to reach the island is by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, or from other nearby islands like Samos, Mykonos, or Syros. Once at the port of Evdilos, the beach is just a few steps away, making it incredibly accessible.
To explore the rest of the island of Ikaria, and we assure you it's worth it, we highly recommend renting a car or a motorbike. Although there is a public bus service connecting the main villages, the freedom of movement that our own vehicle gives us is unmatched. The roads are winding but well-maintained, and they will allow us to discover hidden coves, mountain villages, and stunning landscapes at our own pace. The nearest airports with flights to Ikaria are Athens International Airport (ATH) and Samos Airport (SMI), from where you can take a ferry.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Evdilos offers us an authentic coastal experience, with a composition of sand and small pebbles that give it a rustic, natural character. It's not a beach of uninterrupted fine golden sand, but a mix that feels very pleasant to the touch and is often described as 'mixed'. This combination of sand and small stones, or 'pebbles', is quite common on many Greek beaches and adds a particular charm, especially for those who appreciate natural beauty over uniformity.
The waters of Playa de Evdilos are, as expected in the Aegean, of astonishing clarity. Their turquoise color intensifies under the sun, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a refreshing swim. Being in a protected bay, the waters are usually very calm, making it an ideal place for swimming and relaxing without worrying about big waves. The entrance to the sea is gentle, perfect for all ages, and the underwater visibility is excellent, allowing us to observe small fish and local marine life, making snorkeling a very rewarding activity.
Services and Facilities
Despite its relaxed atmosphere, Playa de Evdilos offers a good range of services and facilities that make our visit comfortable and enjoyable. Being right next to the village and the port, we have everything we need within reach. We can easily find chiringuitos and traditional tavernas just a few meters from the sand, where we can enjoy an iced coffee, a cold beer, or a delicious Greek meal with sea views.
For those seeking comfort, there are areas where you can rent umbrellas and sunbeds, allowing us to spend the day in the sun without worries. Parking is not a problem, as there are spaces available near the port and the village. Furthermore, the beach has showers to rinse off the salt after swimming and, during the high season, there are usually lifeguards watching over the safety of swimmers, which adds an extra layer of tranquility to our experience. The proximity to shops and small supermarkets in the village means we'll never be far from what we might need.
Best Time to Visit
The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Evdilos and the island of Ikaria depends a lot on our personal preferences regarding climate and crowds. We always recommend late spring (late May and June) and early autumn (September and early October) as the ideal times.
During these months, the weather is glorious: warm and sunny, but without the intense heat of midsummer. The waters of the Aegean are already warm enough for a delightful swim, and the island is at its peak splendor, with the flora still lush and the landscapes vibrant. Furthermore, the influx of tourists is lower than in July and August, allowing us to enjoy the tranquility of the beach and the village without crowds. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a livelier atmosphere, with all services and events in full swing, then July and August are your months, although you should be prepared for higher temperatures and a greater number of visitors, especially during the island's famous 'panigiria'.
Activities and Sports
Playa de Evdilos is, above all, a sanctuary for relaxation and enjoying the sea. Here, the main activity is, without a doubt, swimming and the simple pleasure of floating in its serene waters. Thanks to the water clarity and the presence of some rock formations around the bay, snorkeling is a highly recommended activity. With a mask and a snorkel, we can
