Introduction
If there is one place in the Mediterranean that evokes the image of an earthly paradise, that is undoubtedly Formentera. And within that Balearic gem, Playa de Es Arenals shines with its own light, offering us an experience that borders on perfection. It is one of those beaches that, upon seeing them for the first time, takes our breath away and makes us promise to return. Located on the southeast coast of the island, in the Migjorn area, Es Arenals is much more than a simple sandy beach; it is a sanctuary of tranquility, a natural canvas where the immaculate white of its sand blends with the infinite shades of blue of its sea.
We, as beach tourism experts, have traveled countless coasts, but rarely have we found such a harmonious combination of natural beauty, well-integrated services, and an atmosphere of pure well-being. Here, time seems to stand still, inviting us to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle and immerse ourselves in the calm that only a place like this can offer. It is the ideal destination for those seeking to relax under the sun, swim in crystal-clear waters, or simply contemplate the majesty of the landscape. Playa de Es Arenals is not just a place to visit, it is a feeling to experience.
How to Get to Playa de Es Arenals
Getting to Formentera is an adventure in itself, and once on the island, reaching Playa de Es Arenals is relatively simple, which contributes to its popularity. We always recommend planning the trip in advance, especially during high season.
From the Mainland or Mallorca/Ibiza
The first step is to get to Formentera, and this is done exclusively by sea. There is no airport on the island, which is part of its charm and helps maintain its essence. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Ibiza, a journey that takes between 25 and 45 minutes, depending on the type of vessel. From the mainland (Valencia, Denia, Barcelona) there are also direct connections, although less frequent and longer. Once at the port of La Savina, the main entry point to the island, we have several options to head to Es Arenals.
From the Port of La Savina
- Vehicle Rental: This is the most popular option and the one we prefer to explore the island at our own pace. We can rent motorcycles (the classic choice in Formentera), cars, or bicycles. From La Savina, we will take the main road PM-820 towards Sant Ferran and then towards El Pilar de la Mola. Before reaching Es Caló, we will find well-signposted turnoffs towards the Migjorn area, where Es Arenals is located. The journey by car or motorcycle usually takes about 15-20 minutes.
- Public Bus: Formentera has a bus service that connects the main towns and beaches. Line L2 usually has stops in the Migjorn area, near Es Arenals. It is an economical and ecological option, although with fixed schedules that may limit our flexibility.
- Taxi: It is always a comfortable option, especially if we are carrying luggage or prefer not to drive. There is a taxi rank in La Savina and prices are reasonable for short distances.
- Bicycle: For the more athletic and nature lovers, Formentera is ideal to explore by bicycle. There are bike lanes connecting much of the island, and although the path to Es Arenals is not completely flat, it is perfectly feasible for an average cyclist. It is a fantastic way to soak up the beauty of the landscape while heading to the beach.
The Sand and the Water
The true magic of Playa de Es Arenals lies in the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters, two elements that elevate it to the category of paradise. We dare say that few places in the Mediterranean can compete with this combination of purity and beauty.
The Sand: A White and Soft Blanket
When stepping onto Es Arenals, the first thing we notice is the incredible fineness and whiteness of its sand. It is a fine sand, almost like talcum powder, that stretches for six hundred meters, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel its softness under our feet. This characteristic is no coincidence; it is the result of the decomposition of the remains of Posidonia oceanica, an endemic Mediterranean seagrass that forms underwater meadows around Formentera. These meadows act as a natural filter, keeping the water exceptionally clean and providing the sediments that, over time, transform into this particular sand. The whiteness of the sand contrasts spectacularly with the blue of the sea, creating a color palette that seems taken from a postcard.
The predominant type of ground is, of course, sand, which makes it very comfortable for lying down, for children to play, and for the access to the water to be gentle and gradual. We will not find rocks or pebbles that hinder the passage, which is a great advantage, especially for families with young children or people with reduced mobility.
The Water: A Liquid Crystal of Infinite Tones
The waters of Es Arenals are, simply, spectacular. Their transparency is such that, even at several meters deep, we can see the seabed with perfect clarity. The color palette ranges from a light turquoise blue at the shore, through vibrant emeralds, to deeper blues as we go further in. This purity is due, once again, to the Posidonia, which oxygenates the water and filters impurities.
The entry into the sea is very gentle and shallow for many meters, making it an extremely safe beach for swimming, even for the youngest...
