How to Get to Playa de Eretria

Getting to Playa de Eretria is surprisingly simple, making it an accessible destination for all types of travelers. The island of Euboea is connected to the Greek mainland by two bridges in the city of Chalkida (Chalcis), eliminating the need for a ferry for most visitors arriving by car or bus. From Athens, the drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. We always recommend renting a car to have the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, but there are also regular bus services from Athens to Chalkida and then local connections to Eretria.

From Athens

If you fly into Athens International Airport (ATH), you can take a Ktel bus to the Kifissos bus station in Athens, and from there, another direct bus to Chalkida. Once in Chalkida, there are frequent buses that will take you directly to Eretria. The bus journey is comfortable and offers panoramic views of the Greek landscape. For those who prefer comfort, a taxi or private transfer from Athens airport is a faster, though more expensive, option.

By Car

Driving is undoubtedly the most flexible option. From Athens, take the E75 highway north towards Lamia. Turn off towards Chalkida and cross one of the bridges. Once in Euboea, follow the signs to Eretria. The road is in good condition and the journey is quite picturesque. Upon arrival in Eretria, you will find ample Parking available near the beach, although in high season it can be a bit busier. We always advise arriving early to secure a good spot.

The Sand and Water

The Playa de Eretria is distinguished by its particular composition of sand and pebbles, what we call 'mixed'. It is not a fine white sand beach like those in the Caribbean, but offers a mix of coarser sand and small stones polished by the sea. This combination gives it a unique character and, in our opinion, is very comfortable. The small stones are usually smooth and pleasant to the touch, and the water is exceptionally clear, allowing you to see the seabed easily. It is the type of beach where you won't have to worry excessively about sand sticking everywhere.

Water Quality

The waters of Playa de Eretria are calm and shallow in the first few meters, making them ideal for children's bathing and people who are not comfortable in deep water. The water quality is consistently high, a fact confirmed by the presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies environmental excellence and good service management. We have noticed that the sea here is generally calm, protected from strong winds, which contributes to a very relaxing bathing experience. The shades of the water vary from turquoise blue in the shallow areas to a deeper blue as you go further out.

Type of Ground

This variability adds a tactile interest to walking along the shore. We recommend wearing sandals or water shoes, especially if you have sensitive feet, although they are not strictly necessary. The advantage of this type of ground is that the water is usually clearer, as the sand is not stirred up as easily by movement, offering excellent visibility for those who enjoy a bit of snorkeling near the shore.
