How to Get to Playa de Episkopi

Getting to Playa de Episkopi is part of the adventure of exploring Kythnos. The island is mainly accessible by ferry from mainland Greece. The most common departure ports are Piraeus and Lavrio, both near Athens. Ferries from Piraeus are usually slower, with a travel time of about 3-4 hours, while from Lavrio, the journey is shorter, approximately 1.5-2.5 hours, depending on the type of vessel.

Once in Kythnos, the main port is Merichas. From there, we have several options to get to Episkopi. The beach is located about 6-7 kilometers northwest of Chora (the island's capital) and about 2-3 kilometers north of Merichas. We recommend:

• Car or scooter rental: This is the most comfortable and flexible option to explore the island at our own pace. There are several rental agencies in Merichas. The road to Episkopi is paved and in good condition, facilitating access. The journey is short and scenic.
• Taxi: Available in Merichas, although they can be a bit more expensive. It's a good option if we don't want to drive or if we arrive late.
• Local bus: During the high season, there are bus routes connecting Merichas with Chora and other beaches. However, the frequency may not be very high and the stop might not be right at the beach, requiring a short walk. It's always best to check the updated schedules upon arrival.
• On foot: If we are staying in Merichas and enjoy walking, Playa de Episkopi is accessible on foot in about 30-40 minutes, offering pleasant views of the coastal landscape. However, under the summer sun, it can be a demanding walk.

The Sand and Water

What captivates us most about Playa de Episkopi is, without a doubt, its perfect combination of sand and water. The sand is a soft golden color, incredibly fine and pleasant to the touch, ideal for laying out a towel and enjoying the sun or for children to build sandcastles effortlessly. Its expanse means that, even on the busiest days, we can always find a spot to feel comfortable and maintain some privacy. The beach is quite wide at most points, contributing to that feeling of space and freedom we value so much.

As for the water, it is simply spectacular. The Aegean waters here are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from light aquamarine near the shore to a deeper blue as we go further out. The entry into the sea is very gradual and the seabed is sandy, making it an exceptionally safe and pleasant option for swimming, even for young children or those who are not very comfortable in deep water. There are no abrupt rocks or strong currents, ensuring a calm and relaxing swim.

The water temperature is another of its strong points. During the summer months, the sea is delightfully warm, inviting us to spend hours splashing and cooling off under the Greek sun. The clarity of the water also makes it perfect for snorkeling, although there isn't a great variety of marine life near the shore, it's always a pleasure to observe the small fish swimming around our feet. For us, the quality of the sand and the purity of the water are two of the pillars that make this Kythnos beach an unmissable destination.

Although Playa de Episkopi maintains a natural charm and a relaxed atmosphere, it is not lacking in the essential services that make our stay more comfortable and enjoyable. We greatly appreciate this balance between the pristine and the practical.

Chiringuitos and Dining

On the beach, we find a couple of chiringuitos or beach tavernas that offer a variety of refreshing drinks, coffees, light snacks, and typical Greek dishes. They are the perfect place to take shelter from the sun at midday, enjoy a fresh Greek salad or a sandwich, and socialize a bit. Some of these establishments also have bathrooms/WCs for customers, which is very convenient.

Umbrellas and Sunbeds

A part of Playa de Episkopi is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds that can be rented for the day. This is ideal for those who prefer not to carry their own beach gear and seek greater comfort. However, there are also ample free areas where we can spread out our own towel and enjoy the beach at no cost, giving us the freedom to choose our style.
