How to Get to Playa de Emporios

Getting to Playa de Emporios is part of the adventure and charm of this destination. The island of Kalymnos, although well-connected, retains a more authentic atmosphere than some of its more famous neighbors. For us, the best way to get to Emporios is through a scenic journey that allows us to appreciate the rugged beauty of Kalymnos's interior.

From Pothia, the Capital

Most visitors arrive in Kalymnos by ferry to Pothia, the capital and main port. From Pothia, we have several options to head north to Emporios:

• Car or motorbike rental: This is, without a doubt, the option we most recommend. Renting a vehicle gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace and discover hidden corners. The journey from Pothia to Emporios is approximately 20-25 kilometers and takes about 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic and the stops we make to admire the landscape. The road, although with some curves, is in good condition and offers spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the mountains of Kalymnos. It's a route worth taking slowly.
• Taxi: For those who prefer not to drive, taxis are available in Pothia and can take us directly to Playa de Emporios. It's a comfortable option, though more expensive. It's always advisable to agree on the price with the driver before starting the trip.
• Local bus: Although less frequent, there is a public bus service connecting Pothia with the northern villages. However, schedules can be limited, especially outside the high season, and we might need to make transfers or walk a bit from the nearest stop. We recommend checking the updated schedules at the Pothia bus station.

Access by Boat

During the high season, we might find boat tours departing from Pothia or Myrties/Massouri that include a stop at Playa de Emporios. This is a fantastic way to see the Kalymnos coast from a different perspective and enjoy a day of sailing. Boats usually anchor near the shore, allowing us to swim to the beach or be transferred in a small auxiliary boat.

Type of Sand and Ground

The shore of Emporios is not the typical fine, golden sand beach we might imagine. Instead, we find a fascinating mix that contributes to its natural charm. The sand type is mixed, combining small pebbles polished by the sea with areas of coarser sand. This ground type, also mixed, is comfortable for walking and sitting, and has the advantage of not sticking to the skin as much as fine sand, making it easier to clean off when leaving the water. The pebbles, in light tones, shine under the sun and, together with the sand, create a natural mosaic that is a delight for the eyes. As we approach the water, the proportion of pebbles may increase, but never to an uncomfortable degree. In fact, many find that the pebbles help keep the water exceptionally clear by not being stirred up by the waves.
