How to Get to Playa de El Berrón

Getting to Playa de El Berrón is part of the adventure and charm surrounding this corner. It's not a beach with direct access from a main road, which helps maintain its atmosphere of exclusivity and calm. To reach it, our main reference point will be the municipality of Castro Urdiales. From the center of Castro, we'll head east, following the N-634 road towards Bilbao. We must watch for signs to Oriñón or Sonabia, as the beach is in this coastal area, closer to the border with the province of Vizcaya.

Once near Oriñón or Sonabia, we'll need to find a more discreet access. Generally, there is a small area where you can park your car informally, near a turnoff or path that descends towards the coast. It's important to remember that there is no designated and signposted parking as such, so space availability may be limited, especially in the summer months. From where we leave the vehicle, a short walk awaits us along a path, often with some slope and uneven terrain, which will lead us directly to the cove. This small effort is more than rewarded upon discovering the beauty that awaits us.

The Sand and Water

Upon stepping onto Playa de El Berrón, we'll immediately notice one of its most distinctive features: its sand. Here, the sand is mixed, combining finer grains with small pebbles and cobbles, especially near the shore and depending on the tides. This particularity gives it a unique feel underfoot and a more natural, wild appearance. You won't find showers to rinse off the salt, public toilets, chiringuitos for a drink, or lifeguards watching over our safety here. It's essential to be aware of this reality before visiting and come prepared for a more autonomous experience.

The only 'service' we might consider is the possibility of parking, although, as already mentioned, this is informal and limited. These are unregulated spaces on the edges of the access roads or small improvised clearings. Our recommendation is to arrive early in the high season if we want to secure a spot. The lack of services, far from being an inconvenience for many, is precisely what attracts those seeking a more authentic connection with nature, away from mass tourist infrastructure. It's a place to bring our own cooler, our own umbrella, and, above all, our own responsibility.

Best Time to Visit
