Introduction
If there's one place in Albania that embodies the essence of sun and beach tourism, it is undoubtedly Playa de Durrës. Located in the city of the same name, the country's second largest and its main port, this beach is not just a stretch of sand; it is an epicenter of life, culture, and leisure that attracts visitors from everywhere. We, as experts in beach destinations, have thoroughly explored this Adriatic gem and are ready to share every detail with you.
Playa de Durrës stretches for several kilometers south of the city center, offering a vast expanse of golden sand and calm waters. It is a place where the thousand-year history of Durrës—with its impressive Roman amphitheater and Byzantine remains—blends harmoniously with the modernity of an ever-evolving tourist destination. Here, families find a safe paradise for the little ones, young people enjoy a vibrant atmosphere, and relaxation lovers can unwind under the Albanian sun. It is a destination that, while not the most 'wild' or 'exotic' in Albania, offers a complete and accessible beach experience, perfect for those seeking comfort and fun.
How to Get to Playa de Durrës
Getting to Playa de Durrës is relatively straightforward, given its proximity to the capital and its excellent connection with the rest of Albania and Europe. We always recommend planning the trip to ensure the best experience.
By Plane
The most common way to reach Albania from abroad is through Tirana International Airport 'Mother Teresa' (TIA). This airport is located about 30-40 kilometers east of Durrës. From there, you have several options:
- Car rental: This is our preferred option if you plan to explore the surroundings. There are several car rental agencies at the airport. The road from Tirana to Durrës (SH2) is modern and the journey takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Taxi: You can easily find taxis at the airport. Make sure to agree on the price before starting the trip, although they usually have fixed rates for Durrës (around 25-30 euros).
- Bus: There are regular buses connecting the airport with Tirana's central bus station, and from there, you can take another bus to Durrës. There are also direct bus services between the airport and Durrës, though less frequent.
By Car
If you are traveling from neighboring countries like Montenegro, Kosovo, or North Macedonia, the Albanian road network has improved considerably in recent years. The main roads connecting to Durrës are in good condition, although we always advise caution, especially on secondary roads.
By Ferry
Durrës is Albania's largest port and has regular ferry connections with several Italian cities, such as Bari and Ancona. This is an excellent option if you are traveling from Italy or if you prefer to bring your own vehicle. The ferries are usually comfortable and offer onboard services. Once at the port of Durrës, the main beach is a few kilometers away and is easily accessible by taxi or local bus.
The Sand and Water
When we talk about Playa de Durrës, one of the first aspects that come to mind is the quality of its sand and waters, key elements for any beach experience.
The Sand
The sand of Playa de Durrës is predominantly fine and of a pleasant golden color. It is soft to the touch, making it perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with children, or simply lying down to sunbathe. Along its kilometers of extension, the consistency of the sand is maintained, offering a comfortable and clean surface for bathers. It is a 'sandy' beach, without rocks or pebbles for most of its length, which is a great advantage for overall comfort.
The Water
The waters of the Adriatic at Playa de Durrës are, in general, warm and calm, especially during the summer months. One of its most distinctive and appreciated features, especially by families, is its shallowness. You can walk many meters out to sea and the water will barely reach your waist. This makes it an exceptionally safe place for young children and for those who are not experienced swimmers. The absence of strong currents or large waves also contributes to this feeling of safety and calm.
Regarding cleanliness, the beach has worked to maintain high standards, which has occasionally earned it Blue Flag recognition. However, as with many popular urban beaches, the massive influx of tourists in high season can occasionally affect the water clarity in the most crowded areas. Despite this, local authorities and tourism operators strive to keep the beach in optimal condition. We have noticed that the early morning hours are usually the most peaceful and with the clearest water.
Services and Facilities
Playa de Durrës is a well-established tourist destination, and that is reflected in the wide range of services and facilities it offers its visitors. Here, we have hardly missed anything to enjoy a full day under the sun.
Beach Equipment
- Sunbeds and umbrellas: All along the beach you will find numerous concessions offering sunbed and umbrella rentals for a modest price. Many beachfront hotels and resorts also have their own private areas for their guests. It's a convenience we greatly appreciate to avoid carrying our own equipment.
- Showers and Toilets/WC: Public showers are available at various points on the beach, although they may sometimes have a small fee. The chiringuitos and restaurants also usu
