How to Get to Playa de Durrës

Getting to Playa de Durrës is relatively straightforward, given its proximity to the capital and its excellent connection with the rest of Albania and Europe. We always recommend planning the trip to ensure the best experience.

By Plane

The most common way to reach Albania from abroad is through Tirana International Airport 'Mother Teresa' (TIA). This airport is located about 30-40 kilometers east of Durrës. From there, you have several options:

• Car rental: This is our preferred option if you plan to explore the surroundings. There are several car rental agencies at the airport. The road from Tirana to Durrës (SH2) is modern and the journey takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
• Taxi: You can easily find taxis at the airport. Make sure to agree on the price before starting the trip, although they usually have fixed rates for Durrës (around 25-30 euros).
• Bus: There are regular buses connecting the airport with Tirana's central bus station, and from there, you can take another bus to Durrës. There are also direct bus services between the airport and Durrës, though less frequent.

By Car

If you are traveling from neighboring countries like Montenegro, Kosovo, or North Macedonia, the Albanian road network has improved considerably in recent years. The main roads connecting to Durrës are in good condition, although we always advise caution, especially on secondary roads.

By Ferry

Durrës is Albania's largest port and has regular ferry connections with several Italian cities, such as Bari and Ancona. This is an excellent option if you are traveling from Italy or if you prefer to bring your own vehicle. The ferries are usually comfortable and offer onboard services. Once at the port of Durrës, the main beach is a few kilometers away and is easily accessible by taxi or local bus.

One of its most distinctive and appreciated features, especially by families, is its shallowness. You can walk many meters out to sea and the water will barely reach your waist. The absence of strong currents or large waves also contributes to this feeling of safety and calm.

Regarding cleanliness, the beach has worked to maintain high standards, which has occasionally earned it Blue Flag recognition. However, as with many popular urban beaches, the massive influx of tourists in high season can occasionally affect the water clarity in the most crowded areas. Despite this, local authorities and tourism operators strive to keep the beach in optimal condition. We have noticed that the early morning hours are usually the most peaceful and with the clearest water.
