Upon arriving at Playa de Diafani, the first thing that strikes us is the palpable sense of calm. The waters, of an incredibly clear turquoise blue, invite a swim from the very first moment, while the backdrop of the village with its white and colorful houses and the rugged mountains creates an idyllic picture. This beach is the heart of life in Diafani, a meeting point for locals and visitors seeking to escape the hustle and immerse themselves in a more relaxed pace of life. How to Get to Playa de Diafani

The location of Playa de Diafani at the northern tip of Karpathos gives it an air of exclusivity and adventure. Getting here is part of the experience, and there are several ways to do it, each with its own charm. The most common route for most visitors is via Pigadia (Karpathos Town), the island's capital.

By Car

For the more adventurous, renting a car is an option. However, it's important to know that the road connecting Pigadia with the north of the island, and specifically with Diafani, can be challenging. Although much of it is paved, some sections are narrow and winding, especially as we approach Olympos and Diafani. We recommend a robust vehicle, like a 4x4, if you plan to explore the area thoroughly. The journey from Pigadia to Diafani can take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, but the panoramic views along the way are absolutely spectacular and make up for any difficulty. Parking is available in the village of Diafani, near the port and the beach.

By Boat

The most picturesque and relaxing way to reach Diafani is undoubtedly by boat. From Pigadia, there are daily boat excursions that travel along the east coast of Karpathos, making stops at beaches like Kyra Panagia and Apella, before arriving in Diafani. This trip is an experience in itself, allowing us to admire the island's stunning coastline from the sea. Furthermore, Diafani is the departure and arrival point for excursions to the island of Saria. While these boats are primarily tourist-oriented, they also serve as a regular means of transport for locals. The boat trip from Pigadia takes about 1.5 hours.

Public Transport

Public transport options are limited. There are buses connecting Pigadia with some northern villages, but they don't always go directly to Diafani or with the desired frequency. We always advise checking local schedules in advance, as they can change depending on the season. For most travelers, the combination of a rental car or boat excursions are the most practical and pleasant alternatives for accessing this Aegean gem.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Diafani offers us a very particular tactile and visual experience. Unlike the long stretches of fine sand found in other parts of Greece, the ground here is a charming mix. We find a combination of coarse sand and small pebbles or cobblestones, giving it a rustic, natural character. This mix keeps the water incredibly clear, as particles don't suspend as easily as with fine sand. We recommend bringing sandals or water shoes for greater comfort when walking along the shore and entering the sea, although many enjoy the feeling of the pebbles underfoot.

But if there's one thing that truly captivates us about Playa de Diafani, it's the quality of its waters. They are simply spectacular: a crystal-clear turquoise blue that invites you to dive right in. Underwater visibility is exceptional, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and observing marine life. Furthermore, being sheltered in a bay, the waters are usually calm and shallow near the shore, making it perfect for safe swimming, especially for children. The cleanliness of the water is a testament to the care given to this natural environment and the low level of overcrowding in the area. It's a delight to swim in these waters, feeling the freshness and purity of the Aegean Sea.

Services and Facilities

Despite its tranquil atmosphere and somewhat remote location, Playa de Diafani and its namesake village offer a range of services and facilities that ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. We greatly value the combination of authenticity and functionality we find here.

Regarding beach services themselves, it is possible to rent umbrellas and sunbeds in several sections of the beach, allowing us to enjoy the sun and sea breeze in total comfort. Don't expect large resorts, but rather services managed by local tavernas or small family businesses, which adds a personal and close touch to the experience.
