How to Get to Playa de Damatria

Getting to Playa de Damatria is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward. The island of Karpathos has its own international airport, Karpathos National Airport (AOK), which receives direct flights from Athens and, in high season, from several European cities. Once at the airport, which is actually relatively close to Damatria, we have several options to reach our final destination.

The most comfortable and recommended way to explore Karpathos and its Greece beaches is to rent a car or a motorbike. The island's roads, although sometimes winding, are generally in good condition and allow us to move with complete freedom. From the airport or from the capital, Pigadia (also known as Karpathos Town), we will take the main road heading south. Damatria is on the way to the famous Diakoftis beach and the airport, making it very accessible. We will see signs indicating the turnoff to the beach.

As we approach the beach, the road becomes a dirt track, but it is passable for most vehicles. There is an improvised Parking area where we can leave our car or motorbike without any problems. During the high season, we might also find small local buses or taxis offering routes to the most popular Karpathos beaches, but for Damatria, our own vehicle will give us the most flexibility.

It is also possible to reach Damatria via boat tours departing from Pigadia, although these are less common for this specific beach, as it is well connected by land. However, if we fancy a different perspective, some private boat rental companies could take us there. Our recommendation is to opt for a car or motorbike to fully enjoy the island's freedom.

The Sand and Water

What captivates us most about Playa de Damatria is, without a doubt, its combination of sand and water. The type of sand here is mixed, meaning we will find a pleasant mix of golden sand and fine small pebbles. This type of ground, which we classify as mixed, gives it a rustic and natural charm. The pebbles are smooth enough to walk on barefoot without discomfort, and they blend harmoniously with the sand, creating a unique texture under our feet.

But it's the water that truly takes our breath away. The waters of Damatria are incredibly crystal-clear, with a transparency that allows us to see the seabed perfectly clearly, even at several meters deep. The colors range from a bright turquoise near the shore to a deep blue in the more distant areas, creating a hypnotic visual spectacle. The cleanliness and clarity of the water are exceptional, making it an ideal place for swimming and, above all, for snorkeling. It's not uncommon to come across small schools of fish swimming peacefully among the rocks and seagrass.

The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, making it very safe, especially for children or those who are not comfortable with sudden drops. The waves are usually very gentle, almost non-existent, thanks to the cove's configuration, which protects it from stronger winds. This contributes to an atmosphere of absolute relaxation, where the only sound we hear is the small waves lapping the shore. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is pleasantly warm, inviting us to spend hours immersed in its refreshing embrace. It's a true pleasure to dive into these waters and feel the stress dissipate with every stroke.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Damatria is distinguished by its natural atmosphere and its relative simplicity in terms of services, which is precisely what contributes to its charm as a quiet and less crowded beach. Let's not expect to find massive tourist infrastructure here, and that's part of its appeal. However, it does have the essentials to enjoy a comfortable day under the Greek sun.

During the high season, it's common to find a small stand or a local business offering Sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. This allows us to enjoy shade and comfort without having to carry our own equipment from the hotel. Although there is no large, structured Chiringuitos (beach bar) like on other more popular Karpathos beaches, there is often a small 'kantina' or a mobile stand selling refreshing drinks, snacks, and perhaps some fruit. It's a basic service but sufficient so we don't have to leave the beach if we get thirsty or hungry.
