Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Covas, in the charming municipality of Viveiro, province of Lugo, we realize we have arrived at a special place. This gem of the Galician coast, in the heart of the Mariña Lucense, is much more than a simple sandy beach; it is a vibrant meeting point, a haven of peace, and a natural canvas that changes with the tides and seasons. We, as experts in Spanish beach tourism, always highlight it for its perfect combination of natural beauty, excellent services, and a welcoming atmosphere that invites you to stay. Its privileged location, bathed by the calm waters of the Viveiro estuary and protected by the cove, makes it an ideal destination for all types of visitors, from families with young children to couples seeking romance or friends eager to enjoy the sun and sea.
The Playa de Covas stretches for almost one and a half kilometers, offering us ample space to walk, play, or simply relax. Its sand, of a golden hue and incredibly fine texture, is a pleasure for the feet, while its waters, generally calm and crystal clear, invite us to a refreshing and safe swim. The constant presence of the Blue Flag is a testament to the quality of its waters, the cleanliness of its surroundings, and the excellence of its services, aspects we greatly value and that guarantee a first-class beach experience. But beyond its physical attributes, what truly captivates us about Covas is that Galician essence felt in every corner, a mix of fishing tradition, stunning landscapes, and a hospitality that makes us feel at home. It is, without a doubt, one of the beaches of Lugo that deserves to be explored in detail.
How to Get to Playa de Covas
Getting to Playa de Covas is surprisingly simple, which contributes to its popularity and accessibility. We always recommend planning the trip, especially if visiting during the high season, to ensure a hassle-free experience.
By Car
If we are coming from other parts of Galicia or Spain, the most comfortable way to get there is by car. The A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico) will leave us near Viveiro. Once in the vicinity of the city, we will take the exit towards Viveiro and follow the N-642 road, which will guide us directly to the urban center and, subsequently, to the Covas area. The beach is perfectly signposted and is an integral part of Viveiro's urban fabric. Regarding parking, the Covas area has various options. Along the promenade and adjacent streets, we will find regulated parking zones (ORA in some points during the summer) and also public parking lots, some of them quite spacious, although on days of high attendance it can be a bit more difficult to find a free spot. Therefore, if our visit is in the middle of August, we advise arriving early to secure a good spot.
By Public Transport
For those who prefer public transport, Viveiro is well connected by bus to other Galician cities like Lugo or A Coruña. Once at the Viveiro bus station, Playa de Covas is located at a distance that can be easily covered on foot (about 15-20 minutes from the center) or by taking an urban bus that connects the center of Viveiro with the Covas area. During the summer months, the frequency of these services usually increases, making access to the beach even easier without needing to use a car. Furthermore, the promenade that connects the center of Viveiro with Covas is a delight to walk, offering us spectacular views of the estuary and the natural surroundings.
The Sand and Water
One of the greatest attractions of Playa de Covas is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the serenity of its waters. We, accustomed to visiting the best beaches, always highlight these characteristics as fundamental pillars of an exceptional beach experience.
Fine, Golden Sand
The sand of Covas is of exceptional quality. Predominantly fine, of a pleasant light golden color, it invites us to walk barefoot along its extensive shoreline. It is the type of sand that slips softly between the fingers, perfect for building sandcastles with children or simply for laying out a towel and enjoying the warmth of the sun. Its width, especially at low tide, offers us a vast space where we don't feel crowded, even on the busiest days. The cleanliness of the sand is constant, an aspect reinforced by the Blue Flag and one we greatly appreciate, contributing to the feeling of well-being and neatness at all times.
Calm and Crystal Clear Waters
The waters of Playa de Covas are one of its greatest treasures. Being located inside the Viveiro estuary, it is protected from the currents and strong waves of the Cantabrian Sea, resulting in unusually calm waters. This calm is ideal for swimming, especially for the little ones or for those who are not comfortable with rough waves. The slope for entering the sea is gentle and gradual, allowing children to play safely at the water's edge. The clarity of the water is remarkable; on sunny days, we can appreciate the seabed, which invites observation of marine life in the rockier areas at the ends of the beach. The water temperature, although that of the Galician Atlantic, is usually somewhat warmer than on more open beaches, making swimming even more pleasant during the summer months. It is a true pleasure to immerse oneself in these waters and feel the peace they convey.
