What makes Playa de Covachos truly unique and turns it into an icon of Cantabrian beaches is its impressive tombolo. This geological phenomenon, a tongue of sand connecting the main beach to a rocky islet, is only visible during low tide, creating an ephemeral and magical spectacle that invites exploration and contemplation. It is in those moments that the beach reveals all its majesty, offering us the opportunity to walk to the islet and feel part of an almost virgin setting. How to Get to Playa de Covachos

Getting to Playa de Covachos is an intrinsic part of the adventure and, although not complicated, requires paying attention to the signs and being prepared for a short walk. We always recommend planning the visit in advance, especially to check the tide schedules, as this will determine whether you can enjoy the famous tombolo.

Access and Parking

The beach is located in a natural and somewhat secluded environment, which contributes to its wild character. If you come by car from Santander or from any point on the A-67 motorway, the exit towards Santa Cruz de Bezana is your first step. Once in the municipality, signs towards the coast or 'Covachos' will guide you. The final access to the beach is via a rural path that ends in a parking area, which is more of an unpaved dirt clearing. It is important to consider that, especially during high season and summer weekends, this parking can fill up quickly, so we advise arriving early to secure a spot.

From the parking area, the descent to the beach is on foot, via a not-too-long path, but with a considerable slope and, in some sections, rustic stairs. This path, while adding a touch of adventure, makes the beach inaccessible for people with reduced mobility or for baby strollers. We always say that the effort is more than worth it when you see the reward waiting below. We recommend wearing comfortable and suitable footwear for walking, as the terrain can be uneven.

Crystal-Clear Waters and the Effect of the Tides

They are waters that invite you to swim, although, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, their temperature can be cool even in the middle of summer. However, that coolness is precisely what makes them so revitalizing and perfect for combating the summer heat.

A fundamental aspect to consider when visiting Covachos is the effect of the tides. The beach is semi-urban, but its configuration is totally conditioned by this natural cycle. At high tide, much of the sand is covered, and the famous tombolo disappears under the waves, turning the islet into an island. It is at low tide that the beach reveals its maximum expanse and, most importantly, when the tongue of sand connecting the beach to the rocky islet emerges, allowing us to access it on foot.
