Introduction
If there is one place on the Asturian coast that leaves us breathless with its uniqueness and beauty, that is, without a doubt, Playa de Cobijeru. Located in the municipality of Llanes, in the idyllic village of Buelna, this natural gem is much more than just a beach. It is a geological phenomenon, a Natural Monument that invites us to explore the whims of nature and immerse ourselves in a landscape that seems taken from a storybook. We, as lovers of the beaches of Asturias, are always looking for those special corners that offer us a different experience, and Cobijeru fulfills this promise in spades.
The Playa de Cobijeru is famous for being one of the few inland beaches in Spain, making it a must-stop for any traveler exploring the eastern coast of Asturias. Its connection to the sea occurs through a tunnel and various karst fissures, where saltwater filters through and forms a small sandy cove. This setting, surrounded by cliffs and green meadows, offers us an unforgettable picture, perfect for disconnecting and marveling at the geology of the place. It is a true privilege to be able to enjoy such a particular and well-preserved ecosystem, and each visit reminds us of the importance of protecting these natural treasures.
How to get to Playa de Cobijeru
Getting to Playa de Cobijeru is part of the adventure and, despite its somewhat hidden character, it is relatively simple. We always recommend going with time to enjoy the journey and the surroundings. The main access is from the small and charming village of Buelna, in the municipality of Llanes. Once in Buelna, you will find signage that will guide you to the beach. It is important to know that you cannot drive right up to the shore, which helps preserve its natural environment.
From Buelna, you must take a rural path that, after a few minutes, will leave you in an area where you can park the car. Parking is usually improvised on the roadside or in some designated area, so it is advisable to go early in the high season to secure a good spot. From this point, a pleasant 10-15 minute walk awaits us along a signposted path that crosses green meadows and gifts us with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. It is an easy path, suitable for most people, although we recommend comfortable footwear. The walk is part of the experience, a gentle transition towards the uniqueness that awaits us at Playa de Cobijeru.
The sand and the water
Upon arriving at Playa de Cobijeru, the first thing that surprises us is its sand: a fine, golden sand that contrasts with the intense green of the surrounding meadows. Despite being an inland beach, the quality of its sand is comparable to that of the best beaches in Asturias. It is perfect for walking barefoot, for children to play, or simply for lying down and relaxing while listening to the gentle murmur of the water.
The water of Cobijeru is another of its great attractions. Although it filters from the sea through an underground tunnel, the interior cove presents very calm and crystal-clear waters, ideal for a relaxing swim. The water temperature is usually cool, as is typical in the Cantabrian Sea, but the calm of this small bay makes it very inviting on sunny days. We are always surprised by the clarity of the water, which allows us to see the sandy bottom without difficulty. It is an idyllic spot for a different kind of dip, away from the waves of the beaches open to the sea, and an experience we will not easily forget.
Services and facilities
Due to its status as a Protected Natural Monument, Playa de Cobijeru maintains a wild and pristine character. This means that services and facilities are minimal, which is part of its charm and the conservation philosophy of the place. Here you will not find beach bars right on the sand, showers, lifeguards, or rentals of umbrellas and sunbeds. And we, honestly, appreciate it, because it allows the beach to preserve its purest essence.
The only indirect service we could mention is the possibility of parking near the path leading to the beach, as we have already mentioned. Otherwise, the experience at Cobijeru is one of total immersion in nature. This implies that we, as visitors, must be responsible and bring everything we need (water, something to eat, towels) and, of course, take all our trash back with us. It is a place to enjoy with respect and environmental awareness, valuing the opportunity to be in such a special environment, little intervened by humans.
Best time to visit
Playa de Cobijeru is a destination that captivates us at any time of the year, but there are moments when it shines with its own light. We, based on our experience, consider that spring and autumn are the best seasons to fully enjoy this Natural Monument. During these months, the weather is usually mild, the landscapes are dressed in a spectacular palette of colors, and most importantly, the number of visitors is lower. This allows us to enjoy the beach with a tranquility that is harder to find in summer.
In summer, the beach is very popular and attracts many curious visitors and bathers. If you decide to visit in July or August, we recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and find a good parking spot. Sunny summer days are perfect for a swim in its calm waters. Winter, although colder and with shorter days, also offers a different and very photogenic perspective of Cobijeru, with the force of the Cantabrian Sea resonating through the tunnel and the beach wrapped in a more mystical and solitary atmosphere. In short, each season
