How to Get to Playa de Chanteiro

Getting to Playa de Chanteiro is relatively easy, although we recommend using a private vehicle for greater comfort and flexibility. From the city of A Coruña, we will take the AP-9F towards Ferrol and then the exit towards Ares/Mugardos. Once in Ares, we will follow the signs to the parish of Chanteiro, which will lead us directly to this charming sandy beach. The journey from A Coruña usually takes about 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic.

If we are coming from Ferrol, the journey is even shorter, just 20-25 minutes. We will take the AC-122 road and then the AC-130 towards Ares. Once in the town of Ares, we will follow the local signage that will guide us without difficulty to the Ares beach in Chanteiro. Although there are some public transport options connecting Ares with Ferrol and A Coruña, the frequency can be limited, especially outside the high season, so the car is the best option to explore the area at our own pace.

The beach has parking areas nearby, although they are usually limited spaces, especially on the busiest days during the summer. Therefore, we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot and enjoy the day without worries.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Chanteiro wins us over with its golden sand, fine-grained and very pleasant to the touch. It is perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spreading out our towel and relaxing in the sun. The softness of the sand contrasts harmoniously with the turquoise blue of its waters, creating a visually very attractive and welcoming landscape.

The waters of Chanteiro are, without a doubt, one of its greatest attractions. Being sheltered in the Ares estuary, the beach enjoys exceptionally calm sea conditions. The waves are gentle or practically non-existent, making it an ideal place for swimming, especially for families with young children. The transparency of the water allows us to see the sandy bottom, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a refreshing dip. The water temperature, typical of the Galician Atlantic, is cool but very pleasant in the summer months, and for the bravest, also in spring and autumn.

For us, the best time to visit Playa de Chanteiro is undoubtedly during the summer months, from June to September. This is when temperatures are most pleasant, days are longer, and the water is at its optimal point for swimming. Furthermore, it is when lifeguard services and chiringuitos are usually operational, adding an extra layer of comfort to our experience.

However, if what we are looking for is greater tranquility and to enjoy the beauty of the landscape without crowds, the months of spring (April and May) and early autumn (September and October) are also excellent options. The climate remains mild, ideal for walking along the shore, sunbathing, and enjoying the peace that emanates from this corner of the Ares estuary. During these times, the Ares beach gifts us spectacular sunsets and the opportunity to connect with nature in its purest state.
