We, as lovers of the Mediterranean and tireless explorers of its treasures, can state with certainty that Castell is much more than just a beach; it is a natural sanctuary, a piece of paradise that has managed to resist the urban development frenzy that has, at times, transformed other areas of our coastline. For many, it is the last great virgin beach of the Costa Brava, a title it wears with pride and that is reflected in every corner of its landscape.

Upon arriving at Playa de Castell, one immediately feels a special connection with nature. We are met with an extensive stretch of fine, golden sand, bathed by waters so transparent they invite you to dive in instantly. The backdrop could not be more idyllic: a dense pine forest that extends almost to the shoreline, dotted with rocky cliffs and small coves waiting to be discovered. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the song of birds are the only soundtrack, a perfect refuge for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with the tranquility that only nature can offer.

Located in the heart of the Baix Empordà, in the municipality of Palamós, Playa de Castell is a living testament to the fight for conservation. Its preservation is largely due to citizen mobilization that, in the nineties, successfully opposed an urban development project that would have forever changed its appearance. Thanks to that collective effort, today we can enjoy an unaltered natural space, a true luxury nowadays. We always recommend visiting it with respect, aware that we are in a fragile environment of incalculable ecological and scenic value.

How to get to Playa de Castell

Getting to Playa de Castell is relatively straightforward, although its natural character implies certain particularities that make it even more special. We often say that the journey is part of the experience.

By car

The most common option for many is to arrive by car. From Palamós, the journey is short and well signposted. You need to follow the signs to the beach. During the high season months (especially July and August), car access to the parking lot closest to the beach is usually paid. This parking lot is spacious, but fills up quickly, so we advise arriving early if you want to secure a spot. The final stretch to the parking lot is on a dirt road, which adds a touch of rural adventure to the arrival. From the parking lot, the beach is a few minutes' walk away, via a tree-lined path that already immerses you in the natural atmosphere.

On foot (Camí de Ronda)

For hiking lovers and those seeking spectacular views, the Camí de Ronda offers a magnificent alternative. We have walked this section on several occasions and it is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful ways to reach Castell. You can start the walk from Palamós (for example, from La Fosca beach) or from Calella de Palafrugell, although the latter option is longer. The section from La Fosca to Castell is relatively easy, with gentle ups and downs, and gifts us with impressive panoramic views of the coast, cliffs, and hidden coves. It is an experience we highly recommend, especially outside the hottest hours.

By public transport

Public transport options are more limited, which helps maintain the semi-wild character of the beach. There are bus lines connecting Palamós with other municipalities of the Costa Brava, but to get specifically to Playa de Castell, you will most likely need to combine the bus with a considerable walk or a taxi from the center of Palamós. We always recommend checking the schedules and routes of the Sarfa (Moventis) company if you choose this option.

The sand and the water

The quality of the sand and water at Playa de Castell is, in our opinion, one of its greatest attractions. It's what makes us come back again and again.

The sand

We find fine, golden sand, very pleasant to the touch and perfect for lying down, building sandcastles, or simply walking barefoot. Unlike other Costa Brava beaches that may have coarser sand or pebbles, Castell offers a soft, uniform surface that invites relaxation. Its size means that, even on days with more visitors, we don't feel crowded, always finding a good spot for our towel.

The water

The waters of Playa de Castell are simply spectacular. Their transparency is astonishing, allowing us to easily see the seabed. The color varies between shades of turquoise blue and emerald green, reflecting the purity of this environment. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, making it ideal for swimming, especially for families with children. We have enjoyed many dips in these waters, and we are always surprised by their cleanliness and freshness. It's a perfect place to practice snorkeling and observe the rich marine life that inhabits the rocks at the ends of the beach.

Services and facilities

Despite its virgin character, Playa de Castell has a series of basic services that guarantee a comfortable visit, without detracting one bit from its natural charm. We highly value this balance.

Main services

• Parking: As mentioned, there is a paid parking lot during the high season, located a short distance from the beach. It is an essential service given the influx of visitors.
• Chiringuitos: Generally, we find one or two chiringuitos well integrated into the landscape, that offe
