Located at the northeastern tip of the island, this Santorini beach is a testament to the wild and volcanic beauty that characterizes this iconic Greek island.

For us, Playa de Cape Columbo is much more than a simple stretch of coastline; it is a natural sanctuary where time seems to stand still. How to Get to Playa de Cape Columbo

Getting to Playa de Cape Columbo is part of the adventure and often one of the reasons why it retains its wild and less crowded charm. As it is not a beach with developed tourist infrastructure, direct public transport is non-existent. The most comfortable and recommended way for us is to rent a car, a motorbike, or an ATV, which gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace and reach the nearest informal parking area. From Fira, the capital, or from Oia, the drive is relatively short, about 15-20 minutes, and offers us spectacular views of the island's volcanic landscape.

Once we arrive in the Cape Columbo area, we will find a small turn-off or discreet signage pointing us towards the beach. The 'parking' consists of an informal space by the side of the road, where we can safely leave our vehicle. From there, a short descent on foot awaits us along an unpaved path, which, while not excessively difficult, does require comfortable and appropriate footwear. This short walk already gives us a sense of the untamed character of the beach we are about to discover. The hike is short, about five to ten minutes, and culminates with the revelation of this beautiful and secluded corner. It is important to remember that, being a wild beach, there are no facilities for people with reduced mobility, making it inaccessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

The Sand and Water

The sand of Playa de Cape Columbo is undoubtedly one of its most distinctive and fascinating features. Far from the golden or white sands we usually associate with paradisiacal beaches, here we find a unique mix: a dark, almost black sand, dotted with small pebbles and volcanic stones. This type of ground, classified as 'mixed', is a constant reminder of Santorini's geological origins and gives the beach a dramatic and photogenic character like no other. Walking on it, we notice its particular texture, which can heat up considerably under the midday sun, so we recommend bringing sandals or water shoes.

As for the water, it is simply spectacular. The waters of Cape Columbo are crystal clear and of a deep blue, inviting us for a refreshing swim. One of the most interesting peculiarities of this Santorini beach is the presence of underwater thermal springs, a result of the caldera's volcanic activity. This can make the water, in certain areas, feel slightly warmer than usual, creating a unique and surprisingly pleasant bathing experience. The water clarity is perfect for snorkeling, allowing us to observe marine life and the fascinating rocky bottom without needing to venture too far out. The transition of the seabed is gradual, making it suitable for swimmers of different levels, although it is always prudent to be mindful of currents, especially on windy days. The combination of dark sand and turquoise water creates a stunning visual contrast that leaves no one indifferent.

Services and Facilities

We must be completely honest: if what we are looking for are standard beach services and facilities, Playa de Cape Columbo is not our destination. Precisely, its charm lies in its pristine nature and lack of tourist development. This means we will not find showers, public toilets, lifeguards, or a row of chiringuitos offering cocktails and loud music. It is a wild beach in the truest sense, and that is precisely its greatest virtue for those who value authenticity and tranquility.

The only 'service' we can consider is the informal parking by the side of the road, which allows us access to the beach. Occasionally, during the high season and if the influx of visitors justifies it, a mobile vendor or a small improvised stall might set up offering cold drinks or some basic snacks, and even, very sporadically, some rental umbrellas and sunbeds. However, we should not count on this as a fixed feature. For this reason, we always recommend coming prepared: bringing our own water, food, umbrella, towels, and everything needed to spend the day comfortably. The absence of infrastructure is what preserves its natural beauty and allows us to enjoy a more intimate and less commercial beach experience. It is the ideal place to disconnect and enjoy nature without distractions.
