How to Get to Playa de Cantarriján

Getting to Playa de Cantarriján is part of the adventure and requires some planning, especially during the high season. It is located right on the border between Almuñécar (Granada) and Nerja (Málaga), accessible from the old N-340 road. If coming from Almuñécar, you will pass through La Herradura and, shortly after going through a tunnel, you will find a signposted turnoff to the right. From Nerja, the turnoff will be on the left, after passing the Natural Area. It is important to note that vehicle access down to the sand itself is restricted during the summer months (usually from mid-June to mid-September) to preserve the environment.

Access in High Season (Summer)

During the summer, the road descending to the beach is closed to private traffic. Instead, a shuttle bus or minibus service is provided, departing from the upper parking area. This parking is usually paid, but the cost includes the shuttle ride. We found that this system works very well to avoid overcrowding and ensure the environment remains as pristine as possible. The frequency of the shuttles is good, so the wait is usually not excessive. It is a comfortable and ecological way to access the cove.

Access Off-Season (Rest of the Year)

Outside the summer season, the access barrier is usually open, allowing you to drive down to a parking area closer to the beach. However, the road is narrow and has sharp curves, so we recommend driving with caution. It is always advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as parking space is limited. Once down, the beach is just a few steps away. No matter the time of year, the views during the descent are spectacular and already prepare you for the beauty that awaits.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Cantarriján surprises us with a characteristic that distinguishes it from many other beaches in the area: its composition. Don't expect to find a beach of fine, golden sand. Here, the ground is of a mixed type, a combination of dark gravel, sea-polished pebbles, and coarser sand. This mix gives it a very natural and wild appearance, while also providing a comfortable surface for lying down, especially if you use a mat or thick towel. The dark tone of the sand and pebbles contrasts wonderfully with the blue and turquoise of its waters, creating a visually very attractive landscape.

They are famous for their clarity and transparency, allowing you to see the seabed with astonishing sharpness. This characteristic makes it a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. • Sunshades and Sunbeds: The 'chiringuitos' usually offer sunshade and sunbed rental services, ideal for those who don't want to carry their own equipment and prefer the comfort of relaxing in the shade.
• Showers: There are showers available to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home, a detail we always appreciate.
• Restrooms/WC: The 'chiringuitos' also have restrooms, ensuring the hygiene and comfort of visitors.
