Introduction
If there is a spot on the Murcian coast that has stolen our hearts with its authentic beauty and serene atmosphere, that is, without a doubt, Playa de Calnegre. Located in the municipality of Lorca, this Mediterranean jewel is a true oasis of calm that invites us to disconnect from the daily hustle and immerse ourselves in nature in its purest state. It is not just any beach; it is a canvas where the intense blue of the sea merges with the gold of its sand and the green of the vegetation that embraces it, creating a landscape that seems taken from a postcard.
Playa de Calnegre is part of the impressive Cabo Cope and Puntas de Calnegre Regional Park, a protected space that ensures its environment remains pristine and the visitor's experience is as natural as possible. Here, we have found the perfect balance between the tranquility we seek on vacation and the comfort of having essential services. It is one of those Murcia beaches that, once you know it, you know you'll return. Its family-friendly character and gentle waters make it the preferred destination for those traveling with children or simply longing for a haven of peace.
How to Get to Playa de Calnegre
Getting to Playa de Calnegre is relatively straightforward, although we venture into an area of great natural value. Generally, the most common access is by car. If we come from Lorca, we must take the RM-D14 road towards Águilas or Mazarrón, turning off towards the coast at the point indicated for Puntas de Calnegre. From Mazarrón or Águilas, the route is similar, looking for signage towards Puntas de Calnegre or, directly, towards the beach. The road leading to the beach is paved and in good condition, which facilitates the journey.
Once we approach the beach area, we will find an enabled Parking area, which is a great advantage, especially during the busiest months. Although in the middle of August we might have to search a bit more for a spot, the capacity is quite reasonable for the size of the beach. We always recommend arriving early, especially if traveling in high season, to secure a good parking spot and enjoy the beach with maximum tranquility before it gets crowded. The access from the parking lot to the sand is comfortable and does not present major difficulties, making it accessible for most visitors.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Calnegre wins us over from the first moment with its tipo_arena fine and golden sand, a delight for the feet. It is a soft and pleasant sand that invites us to walk barefoot, build sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spread out a towel and enjoy the sun. Unlike other Murcian beaches that sometimes have a mix of sand and pebbles, here sand predominates, offering a uniform and comfortable surface for all our beach activities. The tipo_suelo is, therefore, purely sand, which contributes to the clarity of its waters.
And speaking of water, that of Playa de Calnegre is simply spectacular. The waters are usually calm, crystal clear, and with a turquoise hue that takes our breath away. The shallow depth near the shore makes it an exceptionally safe place for children, who can splash and play without excessive risks. The water's transparency invites snorkeling, allowing us to observe the rich marine life that inhabits its seabed, especially in the nearby rocky areas. We have spent hours exploring with masks and snorkels, amazed by the diversity of fish and small marine creatures. The water temperature is typically Mediterranean, pleasant and refreshing in the summer months, and perfect for a revitalizing swim.
Services and Facilities
Despite its natural character and location in a protected area, Playa de Calnegre does not skimp on services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay for all of us. Among the most notable, we can mention the presence of Socorrismo (Lifeguard service) during the high season, which provides us with invaluable peace of mind, especially if traveling with children. Knowing there are professionals watching and ready to act in an emergency is a plus we always value.
Furthermore, the beach has Duchas (Showers) to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home, a detail that is always appreciated. We will also find clean and well-maintained Baños/WC (Toilets), an essential service often missed on more remote beaches. For those seeking a bit more comfort, there is the possibility to rent Sombrillas y tumbonas (Sun umbrellas and sun loungers), perfect for relaxing in the shade and enjoying a nap by the sea. And, of course, we cannot forget the Chiringuitos and Restaurantes (Beach bars and restaurants) right on the beach. Here we can enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or even a delicious meal with sea views. These establishments usually offer the best of local gastronomy, from fresh fish to seafood rice, turning the beach experience into a true feast for the palate. The nearby Parking, as already mentioned, completes the list of essential services that make Calnegre a comfortable and accessible beach.
Best Time to Visit
The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Calnegre depends a lot on what we are looking for in our experience. We, personally, have our preferences, but each season has its charm.
Summer (June-September)
This is, without a doubt, the high season. If what we are looking for is to enjoy the sun at its peak, take long swims in warm waters, and take advantage of all available services, summer is our best option. However, it is also when the beach receives the highest number of visitors.
