Introduction
Today we delve into one of the most beloved coastal destinations in northern Morocco, Playa de Cabo Negro. Strategically located on the Mediterranean coast, very close to the historic city of Tetouan, this beach is much more than just a stretch of sand; it's a holiday resort in itself, a place where families, couples, and friends find their ideal space to disconnect and enjoy under the African sun. From the moment we set foot on its fine sand, we realize we've arrived at a place designed for pleasure and well-being.
Playa de Cabo Negro has established itself as a benchmark among the beaches of Tetouan and, by extension, the beaches of Morocco. Its reputation is no accident; it has been earned through the quality of its services, the beauty of its natural surroundings, and the warmth of its people. Here, the deep blue of the Mediterranean merges with the green of nearby golf courses and the ochre of the Rif mountains, creating a postcard-perfect landscape that invites contemplation and adventure. It is a destination that undoubtedly deserves to be thoroughly explored.
How to Get to Playa de Cabo Negro
Getting to Playa de Cabo Negro is relatively straightforward, given its popularity and the good infrastructure of the area. For most international visitors, the usual entry point is Tangier-Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG), located about 75 kilometers away, or Tetouan-Sania Ramel Airport (TTU), which is much closer, about 15 kilometers away. From either of these airports, we can choose from several transportation options to reach our coastal destination.
By Car
If we prefer the independence and comfort of moving at our own pace, renting a car is an excellent option. From Tangier, the route is direct via the A6 motorway and then the N2, which will take us directly to the Cabo Negro area. The journey takes approximately an hour and a half. From Tetouan, the journey is much shorter, just 20-30 minutes via the N16 road. Signage is clear and access to Playa de Cabo Negro is well indicated. Furthermore, having a vehicle will allow us to easily explore the surroundings, discovering hidden coves or visiting nearby villages.
By Taxi
Taxis are a comfortable and affordable alternative, especially if we are traveling in a group or with luggage. From Tangier airport or from the city of Tetouan, we can negotiate a fare with a 'grand taxi' (shared or private taxi for intercity trips). It is advisable to agree on the price before starting the journey to avoid misunderstandings. Taxis are usually plentiful and will drop us off directly at our accommodation or at the main entrance to Playa de Cabo Negro.
By Bus
Although less direct, the bus is the most economical option. From the Tetouan bus station, there are local lines connecting to Martil and M'diq, which are towns very close to Cabo Negro. From there, a short taxi ride or even a walk will take us to the beach. This option is ideal for budget travelers who are not in a hurry and wish to experience local transport.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Cabo Negro is distinguished by its natural characteristics that make it so attractive. Its sand is predominantly fine and golden, inviting long barefoot walks or sandcastle building for the little ones. The soft, pleasant texture underfoot is one of the first things we notice upon arrival, and it's perfect for lying down and sunbathing. The type of ground is, as one would expect, mostly sand, which facilitates access and overall enjoyment of the beach.
As for the water, the Mediterranean here presents itself with exceptional calm and clarity. The waters of Playa de Cabo Negro are generally calm, with gentle waves that make it a safe and very pleasant place for swimming, especially for children and those who are not comfortable with strong currents. The water temperature during the summer months is warm and refreshing at the same time, ideal for taking a dip and cooling off. Even in spring and autumn, the sea retains a mild temperature that allows for a relaxing swim.
The cleanliness of the sand and the quality of the water are aspects that are carefully maintained in this tourist destination. Although it may not officially hold the 'Blue Flag' every single year, local management strives to maintain high standards, aware that the purity of the environment is key to attracting visitors. We have always found the beach in optimal condition, which contributes to an unbeatable swimming and sunbathing experience.
