How to Get to Playa de Baleo

Getting to Playa de Baleo is relatively straightforward, although its more sheltered location gives it a special charm. We always recommend planning the route in advance, especially if it's our first time in the area. The beach is located in the municipality of Valdoviño, just a few kilometers from Ferrol, the nearest major city.

By Car

The most comfortable and common option to get to Playa de Baleo is by car. From Ferrol, the journey takes about 20-25 minutes on well-signposted regional roads. We must take the AC-116 road towards Cedeira and Valdoviño. Once we approach the urban center of Valdoviño, we'll find signs to the different beaches in the area, including Baleo. There is a parking area, not very large but functional, near the beach, although in high season it can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early. The advantage of going by car is the freedom to also explore the surroundings and other beaches of Valdoviño.

Public Transport

Public transport to Playa de Baleo is more limited. There are bus lines connecting Ferrol with Valdoviño, but they usually don't go directly to the beach. Once in the center of Valdoviño, we might need a taxi or to walk a good distance, which can be inconvenient if we're loaded with beach gear or surfboards. Therefore, for us, the car remains the best option to fully enjoy the Baleo experience.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Baleo, it's impossible not to highlight the quality of its sand and the uniqueness of its waters. We've visited many beaches, but this one has something that makes it special.

The Sand

The sand of Baleo is predominantly fine and of a golden hue that shines under the Galician sun. It's soft to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot and feeling the connection with the earth. It stretches for its approximately 550 meters in length, offering ample space for bathers and for those seeking a quiet spot. Unlike other rocky beaches on the coast, here the ground type is mostly sand, which facilitates access to the sea and the practice of beach activities.

The Water

The waters of Playa de Baleo are clean and crystal clear, a reflection of the environmental quality of the area. However, we must not forget that we are in the Atlantic, which means the water temperature is cool, even in summer. For us, this is part of the charm of the beaches of A Coruña: a revitalizing swim that awakens our senses. It's important to consider that, being a beach open to the ocean, there can be currents and waves. Therefore, we always recommend paying attention to the lifeguards' instructions and being cautious, especially if we are not used to swimming in waters with currents.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Baleo offers a series of basic services that contribute to a comfortable and safe experience, without becoming a massified or overly urbanized beach. We highly value this balance between nature and functionality.

• Lifeguards: During the high summer season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind. It's always essential to follow their instructions and respect the flags indicating the sea conditions.
• Showers: It has showers, a much-appreciated service after a good swim or a surf session, to wash off the salt and sand before heading home.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there is a parking area near the beach, although its capacity is limited. It's an important point to consider if we plan to visit the beach during peak hours.
• Chiringuitos: In the summer months, one or two chiringuitos (beach bars) are usually set up, where we can refresh ourselves with a cold drink, have an ice cream, or even grab a light snack. They are perfect for taking a break and enjoying the sea views.
