From our perspective as experts in Spanish beaches, Playa de As Furnas is certainly one of those gems that remind us of the force and indomitable beauty of the Atlantic Ocean on the Galician coast. The beach is also a reference point for surfers, attracted by its powerful and consistent waves. Furthermore, it holds significant sentimental and cultural value, as it was here that the famous Ramón Sampedro, whose story inspired the film 'The Sea Inside', suffered the accident that left him quadriplegic. It's a place that invites reflection, contemplation, and, above all, connection with the natural environment.

How to Get to Playa de As Furnas

Getting to Playa de As Furnas is an essential part of the experience, as it immerses us in the rural and coastal landscape of the A Coruña beaches. If we come from Santiago de Compostela, we'll take the AG-55 highway towards the Costa da Morte and then the AC-550, which runs along much of the coastline. From Porto do Son, the journey is short and well-signposted, following the AC-550 south, towards Ribeira. The beach is located near the parish of Xuño.

Directions and Parking

Once on the AC-550, we'll see clear signs for 'As Furnas'. The final access is via a local road that takes us directly to the beach area. We always recommend paying attention to the signs. Regarding parking, Playa de As Furnas has a designated area, usually unpaved, where we can park our vehicle. It's important to arrive early in the high season, especially on summer weekends, as the space can fill up quickly due to the beach's popularity among locals and visitors. We shouldn't expect a paved parking lot with services; it's more of a natural space adapted for parking, in keeping with the wild character of the surroundings.

The Sand and Water

When we step onto the sand of Playa de As Furnas, the first thing we notice is its quality: it's fine, golden sand, very pleasant to the touch. It stretches for about 350 meters, offering a good space for walking or simply relaxing under the Galician sun. However, it's not a uniform stretch of sand; it's dotted with the famous rock formations that give it its name, creating a dynamic and visually very attractive landscape.

The Atlantic water in this area is, as one would expect, fresh and crystal clear. The water quality is excellent, allowing us to enjoy a revitalizing swim. But we must consider that we are on the open coast, and the force of the ocean can be considerable. Therefore, the 'furnas' take on a leading role; these natural pools, created by erosion in the rocks, fill and empty with the tides and waves, offering a more sheltered and calm bathing area, ideal for those who prefer to avoid the stronger currents. It's a unique experience, swimming in these natural pools while hearing the roar of the sea around us. We love the duality of this beach: on one hand, the immensity of the ocean, and on the other, the intimacy of the 'furnas'.

• Parking: As mentioned, there is an unpaved parking area near the beach access. Although it's not a formal parking lot, it serves its purpose and is essential for visitors arriving by car.
• Lifeguard Service: During the high summer season (usually from June to September), the beach has a lifeguard service. This is crucial, given the nature of the Atlantic waves, and provides us with greater peace of mind, especially if we go with children. We always recommend following their instructions.
• Chiringuitos: In the summer months, it's common to find a temporary chiringuito or food truck. These establishments usually offer refreshing drinks, ice cream, and some fast-food options, allowing us to extend our stay at the beach without having to go far for a snack. We shouldn't expect large restaurants, but rather simple and functional options that complement the beach experience.
