Introduction
Cantabria, the 'tierruca', gifts us with landscapes of incomparable beauty, where the green of its mountains blends with the deep blue of the Cantabrian Sea. Among its many treasures, there is one that, although perhaps not the most well-known, has stolen our hearts with its singular charm and atmosphere of peace: Playa de Arnar, located in the picturesque municipality of Arnuero. If what you're looking for is to escape the bustle of the more crowded beaches and find a corner where nature still feels pristine and time seems to stand still, then you've come to the right place. We, as beach tourism experts, assure you that this little paradise is one of those coves that stays etched in your memory.
Playa de Arnar is not just a beach; it's an experience. It's the promise of a day of absolute relaxation, of calm waters inviting for a swim, and of sand so fine it slips through your fingers like silk. Surrounded by cliffs covered in vegetation and with breathtaking views, this cove presents itself as the ideal destination for those seeking to connect with the purest essence of the Cantabrian coast. It's a perfect refuge for families, couples, or simply for those solitary travelers who yearn to find their own space of serenity by the sea. Let's dive together into everything Playa de Arnar and its surroundings have to offer, discovering why it's a must-stop on your Cantabria itinerary.
How to Get to Playa de Arnar
Getting to Playa de Arnar is part of the adventure and, at the same time, one of the reasons why it retains that air of exclusivity and tranquility. We recommend you plan your route well, as its access, while not complicated, requires a bit of attention. The beach is located in the municipality of Arnuero, between the towns of Isla and Noja, an area well-connected by road.
By Car
The most comfortable way to get there is undoubtedly by car. From Santander, the journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes, taking the A-8 motorway towards Bilbao and then turning off onto the CA-141 towards Santoña/Noja. If you're coming from Bilbao, also via the A-8, the time is similar, but heading towards Santander. Once you approach Arnuero or Isla, you'll find signage towards the beach. It's important to know that, although there are parking areas near the top of the cliff, especially during the summer months, they can fill up quickly. We advise arriving early to secure a good spot. From the parking area, you'll have to descend via a path or some stairs that will lead you directly to the sand. This descent, although not excessively long, does have a certain slope, which adds a touch of exclusivity to the arrival and rewards us with spectacular views before stepping onto the sand.
Public Transport
Although a car is most recommended, it's also possible to get close by public transport to the towns of Isla or Noja, and from there, if the distance allows, take a taxi or even enjoy a walk if you're hiking enthusiasts. However, for the convenience of carrying your beach belongings and exploring the surroundings, the car remains our preferred option for visiting Playa de Arnar.
The Sand and Water
When we step onto Playa de Arnar, one of the first things that captivates us is the quality of its sand. It's fine, golden sand, incredibly soft to the touch, inviting you to take off your shoes and feel every grain under your feet. Its texture is perfect for spreading out a towel and enjoying long hours of sun, or for the little ones to easily build sandcastles. The contrast of this light sand with the intense green of the vegetation covering the surrounding cliffs creates a natural color palette that is pure visual harmony.
But if the sand is a delight, the waters of Playa de Arnar are simply spectacular. They are crystal-clear waters, with hues ranging from the lightest turquoise to a deep blue, depending on the sunlight and depth. The cove is well-protected from the waves by the cliffs that embrace it, which translates into generally calm and tranquil waters, ideal for swimming. The water temperature, typical of the Cantabrian Sea, is refreshing in summer, perfect for relieving the heat and revitalizing the body. We always enjoy a good dip in these waters, which seem exceptionally pure to us.
The water's transparency also makes it an excellent place for snorkeling. With just a simple mask and snorkel, we can peek into a small underwater universe, observing rockfish, algae, and other marine species that inhabit the areas closer to the rocks. The combination of fine sand and calm waters makes Playa de Arnar an idyllic place for swimming, floating, and simply letting yourself be carried away by the serenity of the surroundings. It's a true oasis of peace where the sound of waves gently breaking on the shore is the only melody accompanying our stay.
Services and Facilities
Despite its natural appearance and relaxed atmosphere, Playa de Arnar offers us a series of basic services that contribute to a comfortable and pleasant experience. We always appreciate that, even in more 'wild' coves, the needs of the visitor are considered.

One of the most appreciated services, especially after a refreshing swim in the Cantabrian Sea, are the showers. At Playa de Arnar, you'll find showers available to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home or continuing your day. It's a detail that undoubtedly improves the comfort of the visit and allows us to leave the beach feeling clean and refreshed.
