Introduction
Welcome, lovers of the Basque coast! Today we take you to discover Playa de Armintza, a treasure that Bizkaia guards jealously. Located in the charming and discreet municipality of Lemoiz, this cove is much more than a sandy beach; it's a piece of authenticity where the force of the Cantabrian Sea meets the tranquility of a picturesque fishing port. We, as beach tourism experts, have traveled countless coasts, but few have captivated us as much as this corner. Armintza is not for the masses, but a sanctuary for those who yearn for connection with nature, the sea breeze, and the taste of the genuine.
Imagine a small fishing village, with its houses overlooking the sea and the scent of salt spray. Right there, sheltered by a cliff and next to its quaint port, stretches Playa de Armintza. Although modest in size, its character is immense. It's one of those Bizkaia beaches that doesn't appear in all the guides, which gives it a feeling of discovery. Here, time seems to slow down, inviting us to enjoy each wave and the rich maritime culture of Euskadi. It's a perfect destination for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the essence of the most authentic Basque Country, a robust, welcoming, and versatile beach.
How to Get to Playa de Armintza
Getting to Playa de Armintza, on the Biscay coast, is part of the adventure and quite simple by car. The village of Armintza, in Lemoiz, is about 30 kilometers north of Bilbao. We always recommend a car for exploring this area, for the flexibility it offers.
From Bilbao, the most efficient route is to take the BI-631 towards Mungia and then the BI-2120 towards Bakio, turning off towards Armintza. The road descending to the village is winding but offers spectacular views. Once in Armintza, the Lemoiz beach is located next to the port. There are parking areas near the port, sometimes paid during high season. We advise arriving early in summer.
Public transport is more limited. There is a Bizkaibus bus line connecting Armintza with Mungia and Bilbao, but with low frequency. For exploring the region, a car is the best choice, providing the freedom to discover unexpected corners.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Armintza catches our attention for its particular combination of sand and water, with a rustic charm far from typical sandy beaches. Here, nature shows itself in its purest state.
The sand at Playa de Armintza is of the mixed type. You won't find fine sand, but a mixture of coarse sand and small stones or pebbles, especially near the water. This characteristic gives it a wild and natural look, something we value. Walking barefoot is a different experience, connecting with the force of the Cantabrian Sea. We advise wearing suitable footwear if you have sensitive feet.
As for the water, it offers the unmistakable quality and freshness of the Cantabrian Sea. Its waters are generally clean and clear, with shades from blue to emerald green. Being in a small cove and protected by the port's breakwaters, the waves are usually more moderate, although with a ground swell, Armintza is a reference for surfing. The temperature is cool and invigorating. For children, the shoreline at low tide and calm sea can be suitable, always with supervision.
Services and Facilities
Despite its natural character, Playa de Armintza and the village of Lemoiz offer essential services that make the visit comfortable and pleasant, without losing its authenticity.
Among the most important services, we highlight the presence of lifeguards during the summer season. Safety is paramount, and the surveillance team gives us peace of mind. Flags inform about the sea conditions.
For hygiene, the beach has showers to rinse off salt and sand. Furthermore, near the port and the village's establishments, you'll find accessible Bathrooms/WCs.
One of the biggest attractions is its gastronomic offer at the port, where we find Chiringuitos and Restaurants. Here, fresh fish and seafood are the stars. We love sitting on their terraces with sea views and enjoying some good pintxos or a plate of freshly caught fish.
Parking is another key service, with designated areas in the village near the port and beach. In high season, there may be a small fee. It's important to note that you won't find umbrella rentals, sports areas, or playgrounds on the beach, which contributes to its atmosphere of relaxation and authenticity.
Best Time to Visit
Choosing the best time to visit Playa de Armintza depends on what we're looking for. We have enjoyed this corner in different seasons, each with its charms.
For the traditional sun and beach, the summer season (June, July, and August) is the most popular. Temperatures are warmer, the sun shines, and the waters invite a swim. Furthermore, it has lifeguards and the village comes to life. We recommend summer for families, although Armintza never gets overcrowded.
If the priority is tranquility and nature, spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are ideal. The weather is pleasant, the beaches are less crowded, and for surfing enthusiasts, these seasons often offer optimal wave conditions. We adore the colors of nature during these times.
The winter (November to March) is the quietest and wildest time. Temperatures are low, but there are spectacular sunny days to see the force of the sea. We don't recommend it for swimming, but yes for a relaxing getaway and contemplation. Each season has its particular charm at Lemoiz beach.
