How to Get to Playa de Aritzatxu

Access to Playa de Aritzatxu is part of its charm and, at the same time, a small adventure that we always enjoy. If we start from the center of Bermeo, the most rewarding option is, without a doubt, a walk. The walk, which will take us about 15 or 20 minutes, follows a path with some sloping sections, but rewards us with spectacular panoramic views of the coast and the sea. It's a perfect opportunity to anticipate the beauty that awaits us.

For those who prefer the comfort of a car, there is a free parking area near the cove. However, and this is something we have verified on numerous occasions, the spaces are quite limited, especially during summer weekends and in the peak season. Our sincere recommendation is to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot or, if not, consider other alternatives. An excellent option is the Bermeo urban bus, which has stops close to the beach, facilitating access and avoiding parking headaches.

Once in the vicinity, the descent to the sand is via well-maintained stairs or a gentle slope ramp. This makes it accessible for most people, although we must note that for wheelchair users or people with very limited mobility, it might require additional assistance. The path is so picturesque that, for us, it is already part of the Aritzatxu experience.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Aritzatxu, it's impossible not to highlight the quality of its fine, golden sand. It is, in our opinion, one of its great assets. Unlike other beaches in Bizkaia where pebbles are the protagonists, here we find a soft and pleasant texture underfoot, perfect for sunbathing, for children to play building sandcastles, or simply for enjoying a barefoot walk by the sea. The type of ground is predominantly sand, which facilitates both access to the water and enjoyment of the bathing area.

But if the sand captivates us, the water enchants us. The waters of Aritzatxu are a mirror of the purity of the Cantabrian Sea: crystal clear, with tones ranging from emerald green to turquoise blue, and a transparency that often allows us to see the rocky bottom and marine life at our feet. As the cove is sheltered by imposing cliffs, the waves are usually gentle and the swell moderate, making it an exceptionally safe place for swimming. It's ideal for the little ones to splash around safely and for adults to swim peacefully. The water temperature, characteristic of the north, is cool and invigorating in summer, a true pleasure to beat the heat. We always find a special pleasure in immersing ourselves in these waters, feeling how they revitalize us and connect us with nature in its purest state. The cleanliness and care of this environment are palpable, contributing to an unbeatable bathing experience.

Services and Facilities

Despite its small size, Playa de Aritzatxu is surprisingly well-equipped with services that significantly enhance the visitor's experience. We always value the convenience of having the essentials at hand. In the summer months, the presence of lifeguards is a key factor that gives us great peace of mind, especially when we go with children. Knowing that there are professionals watching allows us to enjoy swimming with greater ease.

For our comfort, the beach has showers to rinse off salt and sand before heading home, and bathrooms/WCs that are kept clean and operational, a detail that is always appreciated.

An element we love is the chiringuito that opens its doors during the high season. It's the perfect place to take a break, have a cold drink, a coffee or an ice cream, and if hunger strikes, enjoy a light snack. With its direct views of the sea, it becomes an informal and relaxed meeting point.

Regarding other services, we mention that Aritzatxu does not have umbrella and sunbed rentals, nor large sports facilities or children's playgrounds with swings. Its charm lies precisely in that simplicity and respect for the natural environment. The nearby parking, although with limited spaces, is a plus for those traveling by private vehicle. In summary, Aritzatxu offers just what is necessary for a comfortable beach day, maintaining its essence as a natural cove without excessive constructions that could alter its beauty.
