How to Get to Playa de Alyki

Getting to Playa de Alyki is relatively straightforward, making it an accessible destination for most visitors to Thasos. If we arrive on the island by ferry to Limenas (the capital, also known as Thasos Town) or to Prinos, we can rent a car, which is, in our opinion, the best option for exploring the island with complete freedom. The beach is located about 30-40 kilometers southeast of Limenas and about 20-25 kilometers from Potos or Limenaria, the main tourist towns in the south.

By Car

From Limenas, we will take the coastal road that borders the island heading south. The journey is scenic, with views of the sea and mountains. The road is well-signposted, and access to Alyki is direct, with a clearly indicated turn-off. There are parking areas available near the beach, although they can fill up quickly during the high season, so we recommend arriving early.

By Bus (KTEL)

The KTEL bus network of Thasos is efficient and connects the main towns. There are regular routes that pass near Alyki. We may have to walk a bit from the bus stop to the beach, but the walk is pleasant and allows us to appreciate the surroundings. Checking the schedules in advance is crucial, especially if we plan to stay until sunset.

By Taxi

Taxis are a comfortable option, although more expensive. We can find taxis in Limenas, Potos, or Limenaria. It is a good alternative if we do not want to drive or if we are a small group sharing the cost. It is always advisable to agree on the price with the driver before starting the journey.

The Sand and Water

What captivates us most about Playa de Alyki is the combination of its sand and the clarity of its waters. The main beach, and the most popular one, is a bay of fine sand mixed with small white pebbles, giving it a special shine under the Greek sun. The softness under our feet is a delight, inviting us to walk barefoot and enjoy every step.

The water is simply spectacular. Of an intense turquoise color and a transparency that allows us to easily see the seabed, it is incredibly clean and calm. This is partly due to the natural protection offered by the two bays. The entry into the sea is gradual, making it ideal for children and for those who prefer shallow waters for a relaxing swim. The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, inviting us to stay in for hours.

The Unique Seabed

But there is one detail that makes the water experience at Alyki even more special: the submerged remains of the ancient marble quarry. We can swim over carved marble blocks and columns that sank centuries ago, creating a fascinating underwater landscape. It is like swimming in an open-air museum, an experience not found in many other Greece beaches.

Playa de Alyki is well-organized and offers a full range of services to ensure our visit is as comfortable and pleasant as possible. It is one of those Thasos beaches where we will lack for nothing.

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: There are ample areas with sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent, perfect for relaxing and protecting ourselves from the sun. It is advisable to arrive early in the high season to secure our spot.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Several chiringuitos and traditional tavernas line the beach, offering everything from refreshing drinks and snacks to delicious Greek meals. We can enjoy fresh fish, Greek salads, and local specialties with sea views. Some of our favorites are Aliki Restaurant and Archodissa.
• Parking: As mentioned, there are parking areas near the beach, although they can be limited in summer. We recommend arriving early.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: For our comfort, the beach has showers to rinse off the salt and well-maintained public toilets.
• Lifeguard Service: As a Blue Flag beach, it has a lifeguard service during the high season, providing us with greater peace of mind, especially if we are traveling with children.

For us, the choice of the best time to visit Playa de Alyki depends on our personal preferences regarding weather and crowds. Each season offers a slightly different experience:

• Late Spring (May-June): This is one of our favorite times. The weather is warm and sunny, but not excessively hot. Nature is at its peak, and the influx of tourists is lower, allowing us to enjoy the beach more peacefully. The water is already warm enough for comfortable swimming.
