Introduction
Today we delve into one of those corners of the Basque coast that leaves us breathless, a place where nature reveals itself in its purest and most spectacular form: Playa de Algorri in Zumaia, Gipuzkoa. We are not talking about just any beach to lay out a towel and sunbathe, although you can do that too; we are before an open-air museum, a book of geological history written in stone over millions of years. Playa de Algorri is, without a doubt, one of the most unique and fascinating beaches in Gipuzkoa, an essential stop on any route along the Basque coast.
What makes Playa de Algorri so special is its impressive flysch, a sequence of rocky strata that stretch along the coast, revealing the Earth's history layer by layer. It is a geological phenomenon of global stature, part of the Basque Coast Geopark, which allows us to travel through time and observe the result of processes that lasted millions of years. For us, each visit to this beach is a lesson in humility and wonder, a reminder of the immensity of geological time and the capricious beauty of nature. Prepare for an experience that goes beyond a simple swim: a discovery adventure at Zumaia beach.
How to get to Playa de Algorri
Getting to Playa de Algorri is part of the adventure and offers us several options. The beach is located in the municipality of Zumaia, in the province of Gipuzkoa, a coastal town with excellent connections.
By car
If we come by car, the most comfortable option, we must head to Zumaia. From San Sebastián, the journey takes about 30-40 minutes via the AP-8. Once in Zumaia, we will find several parking areas, especially in the town center or near the port. It is important to consider that, especially in high season, parking can be a challenge, so we recommend arriving early. From the center of Zumaia, Playa de Algorri is a short walk away, following the signs to the Geopark or the coastal path. There is no direct parking at the beach, so we will have to walk a bit, which allows us to enjoy the views of the town and the Urola estuary.
By public transport
For those who prefer public transport, Zumaia is very well connected.
- Train (Euskotren): The Euskotren line connecting Bilbao and San Sebastián stops in Zumaia. It is a very picturesque option, as the train runs along much of the coast. Once at Zumaia station, the beach is about a 15-20 minute walk away. It is a sustainable and relaxing way to get to Playa de Algorri.
- Bus (Lurraldebus): Several Lurraldebus lines connect Zumaia with other nearby towns and with San Sebastián. The bus station is located in the town center, a similar distance from the beach as the train station.
The sand and water
When we talk about Playa de Algorri, the description of its 'sand' and 'water' takes on a different dimension. It is not the typical fine, golden sand beach we find in other latitudes. Here, the ground is predominantly mixed, composed of a fascinating combination of sand, pebbles, and, above all, the imposing slabs of flysch that emerge at low tide. This rocky and geological character is what defines it and distinguishes it from other Gipuzkoa beaches.
The sand is rather mixed grain, with areas where finer sand prevails and others where it mixes with small stones and gravel. However, the true protagonist of Algorri's ground is the flysch, those layers of sedimentary rock that fold and are exposed to the sea, creating a lunar landscape that invites us to explore. Walking on these formations requires appropriate footwear, as they can be slippery in some areas, especially if wet from waves or tide. It is a beach for strolling and observing, more than for building sandcastles.
The water at Playa de Algorri is Atlantic, which means it is usually cool with moderate waves, although this can vary greatly depending on weather conditions and tides. The water quality is generally good, clean and clear, ideal for a refreshing dip on warm days. However, we must be cautious of currents and waves, especially if we are not used to the waters of the Cantabrian Sea. The clarity of the water often allows us to see the rocky bottom and the marine life hiding among the seaweed and rock formations, adding an extra layer of interest to our visit to Zumaia beach.
It is essential to check the tide tables before our visit. At low tide, the flysch spectacle is unparalleled, as the rocky platforms are completely exposed, allowing us to walk on them and observe in detail the geological layers and the fossils that can sometimes be found. At high tide, the beach is considerably reduced and the formations are covered by the sea, limiting the swimming and walking area. For a complete experience at Playa de Algorri, low tide is, without a doubt, the best time.
Services and facilities
Playa de Algorri is, above all, a protected natural space of geological significance. For this reason, the service and facility infrastructure is intentionally limited, aiming to preserve its pristine and wild state. This distinguishes it from many other more urbanized Gipuzkoa beaches and invites us to enjoy
