How to Get to Playa de Agioi Saranta

Getting to Playa de Agioi Saranta is part of the adventure and charm of Pelion. Although the peninsula is famous for its winding roads that snake through traditional villages and mountainous landscapes, access to this beach is relatively straightforward once you get your bearings. Generally, the most common route is from Volos, the main city in the Thessaly region, or from the picturesque villages of Pelion, such as Zagora or Chorefto, which are a short distance away.

From Volos

If we start from Volos, we must take the road east, heading towards the coastal villages of Pelion. The journey will take us through places like Portaria and Makrinitsa, before descending towards the east coast. Signs will guide us towards Zagora, and from there, a short detour will lead us to the beach. The drive from Volos can take approximately an hour and a half, depending on traffic and our speed on the curves.

From the Villages of Pelion

If we are already staying in one of the charming villages of Pelion, such as Zagora or Chorefto, the beach is just a stone's throw away. From Zagora, for example, the journey is just 10-15 minutes by car. The roads, although narrow in some sections, are well-maintained and offer us spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the lush mountain vegetation. It's a perfect opportunity to enjoy the scenery before diving into the waters of Agioi Saranta.

Parking

The beach has designated parking areas, which is a great advantage, especially during the summer months. However, in the peak of August, when visitor numbers are at their highest, the parking can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. Some chiringuitos also offer their own parking areas for their customers. It's important to consider that sometimes we may find sections of road with a bit of dirt or gravel just before reaching the beach, but they are perfectly passable for any vehicle.

The Sand and Water

When stepping onto Playa de Agioi Saranta, the first thing that catches our attention is the particularity of its surface. It's not a beach of fine, golden sand as usual, but a beautiful combination of sand and small pebbles, or what we could describe as a type of 'mixed' sand and 'mixed' ground. This characteristic gives it a rustic and natural charm, and keeps the water incredibly clear, as the pebbles prevent the sand from being easily stirred up. For us, this mix is ideal, as it's comfortable to walk on and, at the same time, contributes to the transparency of the sea.

The waters of Agioi Saranta are, without a doubt, its greatest attraction. Of a hypnotic turquoise and emerald color, they are famous for their crystal clarity. When the sun shines on them, they sparkle with a thousand glints, inviting us to dive in without a second thought. The water temperature is generally pleasant, especially from June to September, reaching its warmest point in July and August. It's perfect for swimming, floating, and simply enjoying the feeling of being immersed in nature.

A distinctive element of this beach is the imposing 'Kalogria' rock, which emerges from the sea at one end. This rocky formation not only adds a scenic touch to the landscape but is also a point of interest for snorkeling enthusiasts. Its surroundings host interesting marine life, making the area a small paradise to explore with a mask and snorkel. The water depth varies, being shallower near the shore, ideal for children, and gradually increasing as you go further out, making it suitable for all types of swimmers.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Agioi Saranta has achieved an admirable balance between preserving its natural beauty and providing the necessary services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. Although it's not an excessively urbanized beach, it does have infrastructure that significantly improves the experience of its visitors.

One of the most valued services are the chiringuitos or beach bars. These establishments, often with a rustic and cozy style, offer us the opportunity to enjoy refreshing drinks, coffees, light snacks, and even more complete meals, like fresh salads or sandwiches. They are the perfect place to take shelter from the sun at midday or to have a drink at sunset, while enjoying the music and relaxed atmosphere. Some of them also have Wi-Fi connection, which is always a plus.
