How to Get to Playa de Agia Pelagia

By Plane

The fastest way to reach Kythira from Athens is by flying. The Kythira National Airport 'Alexandros Aristotelous Onassis' (IATA code: KIT) receives regular flights from Athens International Airport (ATH) year-round, with greater frequency in the summer months. Once at the airport, Playa de Agia Pelagia is about a 25-30 minute drive away. You can choose to rent a car directly at the airport (something we highly recommend to explore the island at your own pace) or take a taxi.

By Ferry

For those who prefer the sea route or are traveling from the Peloponnese, the ferry is the ideal option. Kythira is well-connected by ferry from several ports:

• From Piraeus (Athens): There are regular ferries connecting Athens' main port with Kythira. The journey is longer (about 6-7 hours), but it allows you to bring a car and enjoy the views of the Aegean. These ferries usually arrive at the port of Diakofti in Kythira, which is about a 20-25 minute drive from Agia Pelagia.
• From Neapoli Voion (Peloponnese): This is the shortest and most popular route for those coming from the Greek mainland. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the ferries also arrive at Diakofti. It's an excellent option if you plan to combine your trip with a visit to the Laconia region.
• From Gytheio (Peloponnese): Similar to Neapoli, with ferries also connecting to Kythira, though less frequently.

While there isn't spectacularly diverse marine life, it is pleasant to observe the small fish and the clarity of the surroundings. Furthermore, the waters are generally calm, protected by the bay, making them very safe and pleasant for swimmers of all ages.

During the summer months, from June to September, the water temperature is warm and very pleasant, ideal for spending hours splashing and swimming. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, meaning the depth increases slowly. This is a huge advantage, especially for families with children, as the little ones can play safely at the shore while adults enjoy a deeper swim without worries.
