How to Get to Playa Celestún

Getting to Playa Celestún is part of the adventure and allows us to appreciate the beauty of the Yucatecan landscape. The most common and comfortable way to access this paradise is from Mérida.

From Mérida

• By car: This is our preferred option. From Mérida, we take federal highway 281 heading west. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours (about 90 km). The road is good and well-signposted.
• By bus: Second-class buses depart from the Noreste terminal in Mérida. The trip is more economical, although it can take about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
• Organized tours: Many agencies in Mérida offer day trips, including transportation and a boat tour.

From Other Locations

From the Riviera Maya or Cancún, the journey is long (4-5 hours to Mérida plus the route to Celestún). From Campeche, the drive is about 2 and a half hours via the coastal highway. Upon reaching the town of Celestún, the beach and the dock are easy to find. We recommend filling up the tank in Mérida, as options in Celestún are limited.

The Sand and Water

When we set foot on Playa Celestún, we notice the softness of its sand. It's fine sand, of a pearly white color that contrasts wonderfully with the greenish-blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Walking barefoot along the shore is a delight. The predominant type of ground is sand, with no sharp rocks or uncomfortable pebbles. The waters of Playa Celestún are calm and shallow, especially near the shore, making it safe and welcoming for everyone. The water color varies from emerald green to light blue, and its temperature is warm most of the year. The combination of fine sand and calm waters creates a perfect environment for relaxation, whether sunbathing or floating in the serene bay.

Services and Facilities

Playa Celestún offers us a more rustic experience. The services are modest but sufficient.

Basic Services

• Parking: There are designated areas near the beach.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Abundant along the shore and in the town, offering fresh seafood. Many offer umbrellas and sun loungers to their customers.
• Bathrooms/WC: Most restaurants have bathrooms.
• Lifeguards: There may be some local watchmen, but the infrastructure is limited.
• Equipment Rental: Mainly boats for tours; occasionally kayaks or paddleboards.

Absence of Some Services

• Public Showers: None.
• Blue Flag: It does not have this certification, prioritizing conservation.
• Full Accessibility: Limited, with no specific infrastructure.
• Pet-Friendly: Dogs are generally not allowed due to its status as a protected natural area.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the best time to visit Playa Celestún is crucial, especially for the pink flamingos.

Dry Season (November to May)

• Weather: Sunny days, pleasant temperatures (25°C-30°C), low humidity, and scarce rainfall.
• Flamingo Sightings: Thousands of flamingos migrate to the Ría Celestún. December to March are the busiest months to see them.
• Fewer Mosquitoes: Lower humidity means fewer insects.
• Calm Waters: The sea is calm, perfect for swimming and boat rides.

Rainy Season (June to October)

• Weather: Frequent rains (short and heavy in the afternoon), high humidity, and elevated temperatures.
• Flamingo Sightings: Present, but in smaller numbers and more dispersed.
• Mosquitoes: Greater presence.
• Hurricanes: From August to October, risk of storms.
