We found ourselves immersed in an atmosphere where the rhythm is set by the waves and the sun. It's a destination that captivates us with its contagious energy and natural beauty.
Here, life unfolds between sunrise and sunset surf sessions, seaside yoga classes, and exploring a rich gastronomic and cultural offering. Playa Carmen offers us a complete experience, where adventure mixes with relaxation and the opportunity to disconnect from routine. How to Get to Playa Carmen
Getting to Playa Carmen is, in itself, part of the adventure and offers us a preview of the beauty that awaits. Given its location on the Nicoya Peninsula, the journey requires a bit of planning, but every effort is rewarded with stunning landscapes and a feeling of truly arriving at a remote paradise. We, as travel experts, recommend considering several options to suit our preferences and budget.
From San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR)
Most international travelers fly into one of Costa Rica's two main airports: Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. From either, we have several alternatives to continue our journey to Playa Carmen beach.
- Domestic flight: The fastest and often most scenic option. Local airlines like Sansa or Green Airways offer short, regular flights from SJO to Tambor (TMU), the airport closest to Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen. Once in Tambor, we can take a taxi or private shuttle service for about 45-60 minutes to our destination. The flights gift us spectacular views of the coast and jungle.
- Ferry and car: If we prefer the flexibility of having our own vehicle, we can drive from San José to Puntarenas (approximately 2 hours), where we'll take a ferry crossing the Gulf of Nicoya to Paquera (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes). It's important to book ferry tickets in advance, especially in high season. From Paquera, the drive to Playa Carmen is about 1 hour and 30 minutes on roads that, although scenic, can be a bit challenging, especially in the rainy season. A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for this route.
- Private or shared shuttle: Numerous companies offer direct transportation services from the airports or from San José to Santa Teresa/Playa Carmen. Shared shuttles are an economical and comfortable option, while private ones offer us greater flexibility and speed. This is an excellent option if we don't want to drive or if we're traveling with limited time.
From Puntarenas City
If we are already in the city of Puntarenas, our best option to get to Playa Carmen is to take the ferry to Paquera, as mentioned above. From the Puntarenas dock, the ferry will take us across the blue waters of the gulf, offering a relaxing crossing. Once in Paquera, we can take a local bus, a taxi, or a shuttle to the beach. It's important to consider that bus connections from Paquera can be less frequent, so planning ahead is key.
Within the Area
Once in Playa Carmen and its surroundings (Santa Teresa, Mal País), the most popular way to get around is by renting an ATV (quad) or a motorcycle. This gives us the freedom to explore nearby beaches, restaurants, and shops with ease. There are also local taxis and some bus services connecting the main areas. The roads are mostly dirt and can be dusty in the dry season or muddy in the wet season, making a 4x4 or ATV the ideal vehicles.
The Sand and the Water
The sensory experience at Playa Carmen is one of the reasons we fall in love with this place. The sand and water here have a distinctive personality that invites us to both relaxation and adventure.
The Sand
We encounter light-colored sand, predominantly fine and soft to the touch, stretching for kilometers. It's perfect for long barefoot walks at sunset, for building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply for lying down and feeling its warmth under the tropical sun. Although in some sections, especially at the ends or near rock formations, we might find some mixture with coarser elements or small shells, the overall feeling is one of comforting softness. The ground type is clearly sand, which facilitates access and enjoyment for all visitors. It's common to see people practicing yoga or meditating directly on the sand, taking advantage of its natural energy.
The Water
The waters of Playa Carmen are warm year-round, with temperatures rarely dropping below 25°C, allowing us to enjoy a refreshing swim at any time. However, what truly defines the character of the water here are its waves.
