How to Get to Playa Caletones

Getting to Playa Caletones is part of the adventure and, although it is not as accessible as major tourist hubs, its charm lies precisely in that feeling of discovery. Located on the north coast of Holguín, it is about 15-20 kilometers east of Gibara, the 'White Villa', and about 70 kilometers from the city of Holguín.

From the City of Holguín

If we are coming from the provincial capital, the most common route is to take the road towards Gibara. Once in Gibara, the road continues east. We can choose:

• Car rental: This is the most comfortable and flexible option, allowing us to explore at our own pace. The road, although not always in perfect condition, is passable.
• Taxi: We can hire a private taxi from Holguín or Gibara. It is advisable to negotiate a round-trip price, including waiting time at the beach.
• Local transport: There are public or shared transport options, like 'almendrones' (shared taxis), which can take us to Gibara, and from there, another local transport to Caletones. This is a more economical but less direct option.

From Gibara

From Gibara, the journey is shorter and more picturesque. The coastal road takes us directly to the Holguín beach of Caletones. It is a trip of about 20-30 minutes, where we can appreciate the rural and maritime landscape of the area. Often, the residents of Gibara themselves offer transport services to visitors. Signage may be limited, so it is advisable to ask locals if we have any doubts.

The Sand and Water

Playa Caletones is characterized by a harmonious combination of natural elements. • Chiringuitos: In the main area, we will find small, modest chiringuitos or food stalls run by locals. Here we can enjoy refreshments, cold beers, and often, delicious dishes of fresh fish or seafood prepared on the spot. It is an excellent opportunity to try local cuisine and support the community.
• Parking: There is a designated, though informal, area where we can park our vehicles. Do not expect a paved or 24-hour guarded parking lot, but it is a safe and sufficient space for visitors.
• Umbrellas and sunbeds: Some of the chiringuitos or private individuals offer umbrella and sunbed rentals for a modest price. This allows us to enjoy shade and comfort without having to carry our own equipment.
• Lifeguarding: Although there is no permanent lifeguard tower as on larger beaches, there is usually local staff attentive to the safety of bathers, especially during the high season. It is always advisable to be cautious, especially if we explore the rockier areas or the deeper parts of the natural pools.
