We, as beach tourism experts, are always on the lookout for those hidden treasures that still retain their virgin essence and natural charm. And it is precisely in that search that we have discovered Playa Arriba, a shining jewel in the province of El Seibo, Dominican Republic. This beach, often overshadowed by more famous destinations, offers us an authentic and deeply relaxing experience, far from the hustle and bustle of the crowds. Here, time seems to stand still, inviting us to reconnect with nature and with ourselves.

When we talk about Playa Arriba, we are not referring to a luxury resort or a mass tourist center. We are referring to a stretch of coastline that still breathes freedom and authenticity. Imagine an expanse of soft sand, bathed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, framed by lush vegetation and dotted with the shade of palm trees. It is a place where the sound of the waves is the only soundtrack and where the sea breeze caresses us with its uninterrupted freshness. How to Get to Playa Arriba

Getting to Playa Arriba is part of the adventure and offers us a deeper insight into authentic Dominican Republic. Although it is not as accessible a destination as Punta Cana, the journey is worth it. Generally, we recommend flying into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), which is the closest and has the best connectivity. From there, the drive to the Miches area, where Playa Arriba is located, usually takes between an hour and a half and two hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

From Punta Cana or Santo Domingo

If we are coming from Punta Cana, we will take the Coral Highway west to the exit towards Higüey. From Higüey, we will continue on the road that leads directly to Miches. Much of this route has been improved in recent years, which makes access much easier. However, once we get close to the coast and, in particular, to the paths leading to more remote beaches like Playa Arriba, we may encounter unpaved sections or less-than-optimal conditions. Therefore, we always advise renting a 4x4 vehicle if possible, or at least a car with good suspension and ground clearance, especially if we plan to explore the surroundings.

From Santo Domingo, the trip is a bit longer, approximately three and a half to four hours. We will take the Autopista del Este and then turn off towards El Seibo and, finally, towards Miches. It is a scenic journey that allows us to appreciate the rural landscapes of the Dominican Republic, from sugarcane fields to small villages. For those who prefer not to drive, there is always the option of hiring a private taxi or a tourist transportation service, which can be more comfortable, although a bit more expensive. Whatever option we choose, the reward of reaching this beautiful El Seibo beach is immense.

The Sand and the Water

When we set foot on Playa Arriba, the first thing we notice is the quality of its sand. We can assure you that it is fine sand, of a golden hue that shines under the Caribbean sun. It is so soft that it invites us to walk barefoot along its entire length, feeling each grain under our feet. This characteristic makes it ideal for long morning or evening walks, leaving ephemeral footprints that the sea erases with each wave. The texture of the sand is uniform and clean, giving us a feeling of purity and untouched nature.

As for the water, we are met with a palette of blues and turquoises that takes our breath away. The waters of Playa Arriba are generally calm, especially on windless days, making it a perfect place for a refreshing and safe swim. The water temperature is warm and pleasant all year round, inviting us to immerse ourselves and enjoy its caress. The transparency is such that we can see our feet several meters from the shore, and if we venture a little further, we might even glimpse some small marine life. The combination of fine sand and crystal-clear waters creates a stunning visual contrast, making this El Seibo beach a true paradise for the senses.

Services and Facilities

We always emphasize that Playa Arriba is a beach with a more wild and natural charm, which implies that its services and facilities are more limited compared to major tourist destinations. Here, the priority is the preservation of the environment, and that is reflected in the infrastructure.

Basic Services

Even so, for our comfort, we have noticed that there are some basic services that, although not as sophisticated, are very much appreciated. Finding parking is relatively easy, as the area is not so developed and there is space to park near the beach. We may come across some chiringuitos or small food stalls run by locals. These establishments usually offer refreshing drinks, cold beers, and, of course, delicious Dominican food, especially fresh fish that is often caught the same day. It is also common for these same chiringuitos to have umbrellas and sun loungers that we can rent for a modest price, allowing us to enjoy the shade and comfort while relaxing on the sand.

What we will not find are the large infrastructures of other destinations. There are no sophisticated public showers, nor modern bathrooms with all the comforts.
