How to Get to Playa Chelem
Getting to Playa Chelem is relatively straightforward, especially if you are on the Yucatan Peninsula. We always recommend planning the trip in advance to ensure a smooth experience. The beach is located just about 10 kilometers west of Progreso, and about 45-50 kilometers north of the vibrant city of Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan.
From Merida
If your starting point is Merida, the most comfortable way to get to Chelem is by car. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic. You should take federal highway 261 towards Progreso. Once in Progreso, follow the signs to Chelem, which is a clear turnoff to the west along the coastal road. There is a shared van (combi) service from Merida to Progreso, and from Progreso you can take another shared van or a local taxi that will take you directly to Playa Chelem. It's an economical option and allows you to interact with the local people.
From Cancun or Riviera Maya
For those arriving from more distant destinations like Cancun or the Riviera Maya, the most efficient option is to fly into Merida International Airport (MID) and from there follow the directions above. Alternatively, you can rent a car in Cancun and enjoy a road trip of approximately 4 and a half to 5 hours, passing through interesting landscapes and having the flexibility to stop at other points of interest along the way. We always find that renting a vehicle offers the greatest freedom to explore the region at our own pace.
By Public Transport
As we mentioned, public transport is a viable option. From Merida, AutoProgreso line buses depart very frequently for Progreso. Once at the Progreso bus terminal, you will easily find shared vans or taxis that will take you to Chelem in about 15-20 minutes. It's an excellent way to immerse yourself in local life and see the day-to-day of the Yucatecan coast people.
The Sand and Water
The first thing you'll notice when stepping onto Playa Chelem is its sand. It is predominantly fine and of a soft, almost creamy white color, which feels incredibly pleasant underfoot. Unlike some beaches with coarse or shell-filled sand, here you can walk barefoot for kilometers without any discomfort. It's perfect for building sandcastles or simply sitting and enjoying the view without worrying about discomfort.
The waters of Playa Chelem are, without a doubt, one of its greatest attractions. They are notably calm and shallow, making them ideal for everyone. We mean that you can venture several meters out to sea and the water will barely cover you up to your waist or chest, depending on the tide. This feature is a blessing for families with young children, as they can play and splash safely, without the worries caused by strong currents or large waves.
The color of the water varies between shades of emerald green and turquoise blue, reflecting the sky and the shallowness. The temperature is warm for most of the year, inviting a refreshing swim at any time of the day. Don't expect spectacular coral reefs right on the shore, but the clarity of the water does allow you to see small fish and crabs, especially in the calmer areas. The type of seabed is consistent: pure sand, without rocks or pebbles that could hinder access or enjoyment of the swim. It's a delight for the senses and a constant invitation to immerse yourself and forget about everything.
Services and Facilities
Although Playa Chelem retains a rustic and local charm, it does not lack the essential services to make your visit comfortable and pleasant. We have noticed that the range of services has grown over the years, adapting to the needs of visitors without losing its essence.
Gastronomy and Chiringuitos
Along the coast, you will find several chiringuitos and local restaurants. These establishments, many of them modest 'palapas' with palm roofs, offer a delicious variety of fresh seafood, fried fish, ceviches, and other typical dishes of Yucatecan cuisine. It's the perfect place to enjoy a meal with sea views, feeling the sea breeze. The quality and freshness of the products are unbeatable, and the prices are usually very affordable, which we love.
Umbrellas and Sun Loungers
In some areas of the beach, especially near restaurants or rental houses, it is possible to find umbrellas and sun loungers available for rent. This is ideal if you don't want to carry your own equipment and wish to secure a spot...
