How to Get to Playa Paamul

Getting to Playa Paamul is relatively easy, making it an attractive option for a day trip or a longer stay. Its privileged location on federal highway 307, which connects Cancún with Tulum, facilitates arrival from the main points of interest in the Riviera Maya.

From Cancún or Cancún International Airport (CUN)

If you land in Cancún, the most comfortable way to get there is to rent a car. The distance is approximately 80 kilometers to the south, which translates to a journey of just over an hour. You just need to take federal highway 307 towards Tulum. You will see the turnoff to Playa Paamul clearly signposted on the left. Another option is to take a colectivo (public van transport) from Cancún to Playa del Carmen, and then another colectivo or a taxi to Paamul. This is the most economical option, although a bit slower.

From Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is only about 15-20 minutes south of Playa Paamul, making it very accessible. From downtown Playa del Carmen, you can take a taxi, which will cost you between 200 and 300 Mexican pesos, depending on negotiation and time of day. The most economical and popular option is to take a colectivo on Calle 2 with Avenida 20 (or at other points on the federal highway). You just need to tell the driver you are going to Playa Paamul, and he will drop you off at the entrance, from where you will have to walk a few meters to the beach. If you are in a rental car, the journey is direct via the 307 heading south.

From Tulum

From Tulum, Playa Paamul is located about 35-40 kilometers to the north, which means a journey of approximately 30-40 minutes. Again, federal highway 307 is your best ally. You can opt for a taxi, a colectivo (heading to Playa del Carmen or Cancún), or your own vehicle. The signage is clear, so you won't have any trouble finding it.

Once you turn off the federal highway, you will follow a paved road that will take you directly to the beach entrance and the parking area. The parking is usually spacious and often free or with a minimal fee if you access it through some private property or beach club. We always recommend renting a car to have the freedom to explore this and other beaches of Quintana Roo at your own pace.

The Sand and the Water

When we step onto the sand of Playa Paamul, we immediately notice its characteristic softness. It is a fine, almost pearly white sand that does not get excessively hot under the Caribbean sun, making it very pleasant to walk on barefoot. Unlike other beaches where the sand can be coarser or mixed with shells, here a nearly talc-like texture predominates, inviting relaxation and play. It is the kind of sand that slips between your fingers, perfect for building sandcastles or simply lying down and enjoying the sun.

The type of ground on the beach is predominantly sand, which facilitates access to the sea and staying on the shore. However, and this is part of its charm and what makes it a paradise for snorkeling, at the ends of the bay and a few meters from the shore, we will find rocky formations and coral reefs. These rocky areas are home to vibrant marine life, but it is important to be cautious when entering or exiting the water in these areas to avoid tripping or cuts.

But the true star of Playa Paamul is, without a doubt, its water. Of an intense turquoise color that fades to a deep blue, it is exceptionally crystal-clear and calm. The bay in which it is located is protected by a natural barrier of reefs, which minimizes waves and creates a natural pool ideal for swimming and, above all, for snorkeling. The visibility underwater is impressive, allowing us to easily admire the colorful underwater world.

We were amazed by the richness of the marine life. We were able to observe a great variety of brightly colored tropical fish, small coral formations, and even a sea turtle if we are lucky and patient.
