How to Get to Playa Holbox

Getting to Playa Holbox is part of the adventure and contributes to its aura of exclusivity. Being an island, the main access is by ferry. We usually recommend the following route:

From Cancún or Riviera Maya

Most travelers arrive first in Cancún. From there, we have several options to get to the port of Chiquilá, the departure point for Holbox:

• By rental car: It's a flexible option if we plan to explore other beaches in Quintana Roo. The journey takes approximately two hours from Cancún or an hour and a half from Playa del Carmen. In Chiquilá, there are several secure parking lots where we can leave our vehicle for a daily fee. It's important to remember that cars are not allowed in Holbox, so the car stays on the mainland.
• By bus: The ADO bus line offers direct services from Cancún airport, Cancún bus station, and Playa del Carmen to Chiquilá. It's an economical and comfortable option, although schedules can be limited.
• By taxi or private transfer: This is the fastest and most comfortable option, especially if we are traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage. We can book a private transfer that picks us up directly at the airport or our hotel and takes us to the Chiquilá dock.

The Ferry to Holbox

Once in Chiquilá, we take a ferry. There are two main companies, '9 Hermanos' and 'Holbox Express', that operate crossings every 30 minutes from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (schedules may vary, so it's good to check in advance). The ferry ride is short, about 20-25 minutes, and offers us the first panoramic views of the turquoise sea. Upon arriving at the Holbox port, the famous golf carts, the island's taxis, await to take us directly to our accommodation. It's a picturesque experience that immediately immerses us in the island's relaxed atmosphere.

The Sand and Water

Playa Holbox welcomes us with a perfect combination of sand and water that makes it truly unique. The sand is immaculately white, soft, and so fine it feels like flour under our feet. Walking barefoot along the shore is a delight, feeling the coolness and silky texture that contrasts with the Caribbean sun's heat. Despite its rustic and relaxed atmosphere, Playa Holbox offers a good range of services and facilities to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. We appreciate the balance between pristine nature and necessary comforts.

• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the beach, we find numerous chiringuitos and small restaurants where we can enjoy delicious local dishes and refreshing drinks. From fresh seafood to Mexican snacks, the gastronomic offer is varied and tasty. Many of them offer service directly to the sun loungers.
• Sun Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: It's common to find establishments that rent sun umbrellas and comfortable sun loungers by the day, perfect for protecting ourselves from the sun and enjoying the sea breeze. Some hotels and beach clubs also offer these amenities to their guests.
• Parking: As mentioned, cars are not allowed on the island. 'Parking' refers to the secure parking lots in Chiquilá, where we leave our vehicles before taking the ferry. On the island, transport is limited to golf carts, bicycles, or walking.
