Introduction
If there is a corner in the Riviera Maya that still preserves the magic of the authentic and the pristine, that is undoubtedly Playa Chemuyil. Known to many as 'The Hidden Bay', this beach is a true treasure in the heart of Quintana Roo, Mexico. We have had the privilege of visiting it on several occasions and each time it surprises us with its serene beauty and atmosphere of peace. Imagine a perfect crescent-shaped bay, embraced by dense tropical vegetation, with white sands so soft they feel like flour and waters so turquoise and transparent that they irresistibly invite you to dive in.
`Playa Chemuyil` is not one of those beaches crowded with resorts and noisy activities. It is, on the contrary, a natural sanctuary, a place where time seems to stand still and nature is displayed in its full splendor. It is especially famous for being an important nesting site for sea turtles, which adds immeasurable ecological value and a special magic for those who visit with respect and admiration. For us, it is the perfect escape to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with the essence of the Mexican Caribbean.
How to Get to Playa Chemuyil
Getting to Playa Chemuyil is part of the adventure and its charm as a 'hidden gem'. Located in the Riviera Maya, between Akumal and Tulum, access is relatively straightforward, although it requires a small detour from the main highway. If you are traveling from Cancún or Playa del Carmen heading south, or from Tulum heading north, you should take federal highway 307. Approximately 15 kilometers south of Akumal and about 20 kilometers north of Tulum, you will find the sign for the town of Chemuyil.
Once you take the turnoff towards the town of Chemuyil, you should follow the signs to the beach. The road is a dirt track, sometimes a bit rough, but perfectly passable by car. We always recommend going with caution, enjoying the jungle landscape that flanks the path. There is a small parking lot upon arrival, where they usually charge a symbolic fee for the maintenance of the place, which we think is fair to preserve this paradise. It is also possible to arrive by 'colectivo' (local public transport) from Tulum or Playa del Carmen; these will drop you off on the highway and from there you can take a local taxi or, if you feel adventurous, walk the short distance to the beach. Whatever your choice, arriving at `Playa Chemuyil` is always a prelude to the tranquility that awaits you.
The Sand and the Water
The sand at Playa Chemuyil is simply spectacular. It is immaculately white, very fine and soft to the touch, almost like talcum powder. Walking barefoot on it is an extremely pleasant experience, and the temperature of the sand is ideal, never burning excessively thanks to its light color that reflects the sun. It is the perfect type of sand for building castles, for lying down and feeling your body mold to its softness, or simply for enjoying a relaxing walk along the shore.
But if the sand is impressive, the water is simply magical. The waters of Playa Chemuyil are a vibrant, almost unreal turquoise color, and their transparency is astonishing. We can see the seabed with incredible clarity, even at several meters deep. The most notable feature is the calmness of its waters, protected by the shape of the bay and a nearby reef that acts as a natural barrier against strong currents. This makes it an ideal place for swimming, even for the little ones or for those who don't feel very confident in the sea. The water temperature is always warm and pleasant, inviting long dips and enjoyment of every moment in this paradise of Quintana Roo.
Services and Facilities
The services and facilities at Playa Chemuyil are quite basic, and that is precisely part of its charm. Here you will not find large hotel complexes or massive tourist infrastructure, which helps maintain its natural and relaxed atmosphere. However, it does have the essentials for a comfortable visit.
Upon arrival, you will find a Parking area where, as mentioned, they usually charge a small fee. There are also Bathrooms/WC available, which is always a relief, especially when traveling with family. In the beach area, it is common to find some Chiringuitos or small local stalls offering cold drinks, snacks, and perhaps some simple dishes, like ceviche or tacos. Don't expect a gourmet menu, but fresh and tasty options to satisfy your appetite.
During the high season or on weekends, there are likely to be Lifeguards watching over the beach, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially if you are with children. Furthermore, some local vendors often offer the rental of Umbrellas and sunbeds, allowing you to enjoy the shade and comfort without having to carry your own equipment. We always recommend supporting these small local businesses, as they are part of the community and contribute to the local economy. It is important to remember that, being a protected natural area, the infrastructure is limited and respect for the environment is paramount.
Best Time to Visit
Choosing the best time to visit `Playa Chemuyil` depends a bit on your personal preferences, but we always recommend the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is generally sunny and pleasant, with warm but not excessively hot temperatures, and lower humidity. It is the ideal time to enjoy the beach, the sun, and outdoor activities without worrying too much about rain.
However, if your main interest is observing sea turtles, the nesting season runs from May to October. During these months, it is more proba
