How to get to Playa San Agustinillo

Getting to this paradisiacal corner of the Oaxaca beaches is an exciting part of the adventure. The options are varied, depending on your starting point and your budget. We always recommend planning ahead, especially if you travel during high season.

By air

The nearest airports to Playa San Agustinillo are:

• Huatulco International Airport (HUX): This is the closest, approximately 45-60 minutes by car. From here, you can take a direct taxi, which is the most comfortable but also the most expensive option. Another alternative is to take a 'colectivo' (shared van) or an ADO bus to Pochutla, and from there a local taxi or colectivo to San Agustinillo.
• Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM): It is about 1.5 to 2 hours away. Similar to the previous one, you can opt for a direct taxi, or take an ADO bus or colectivo to Pochutla and then local transport. Puerto Escondido is an excellent option if you plan to combine your visit with the surfing experience or the nightlife of Zicatela.

By road

If you are coming from Oaxaca City, the route is spectacular but winding. The most common option is to take a first-class bus (ADO) to San Pedro Pochutla. The journey takes between 6 and 8 hours, passing through impressive mountain landscapes. Once in Pochutla, the bus station is a central hub where you will easily find shared or private taxis that will take you directly to Playa San Agustinillo in about 20-30 minutes. The cost of these shared taxis is very affordable and is how most locals get around.

If you prefer to drive, Federal Highway 200 is the main coastal artery connecting the different points of interest. The road is in good condition for the most part, although it is always advisable to drive with caution, especially on curves and when passing through small towns. The journey offers panoramic views of the ocean and lush tropical vegetation, making the trip an integral part of the experience.

The sand and the water

The sensory experience at Playa San Agustinillo begins long before you immerse yourself in its waters. When you set foot on its shore, the first thing you notice is the fine sand, of a soft golden hue that invites you to walk barefoot. It is clean sand, pleasant underfoot, ideal for building sandcastles or simply relaxing and feeling its texture. Unlike other Mexico beaches with coarser or rockier sand, here the softness is constant throughout the bay.

The predominant type of soil is, as we have already mentioned, sand, which contributes to the feeling of comfort and ease of movement. You will not find large rocks or uncomfortable pebbles in the main swimming area, although at the ends of the beach, where the rock formations that protect the bay are located, there are some areas with small rocks that are ideal for snorkeling.

But if there is one thing that truly distinguishes Playa San Agustinillo, it is its waters. They are incredibly warm and crystal clear, with shades ranging from a translucent emerald green near the shore to a deep blue offshore. The most notable feature is its gentle, almost non-existent waves. The bay is naturally protected by two rocky headlands, creating a perfect natural pool. This makes it the ideal beach for:

• People who cannot swim: The shallow depth near the shore and the absence of strong currents allow you to enjoy the water without worry.
