Introduction
As experts in beach destinations, we are always looking for those places that, beyond scenic beauty, offer an authentic and memorable experience. And for this reason, Playa Puerto Ángel, on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, stands out as a true gem. It's not just a beach; it's a little piece of Mexican life where time seems to move at a different pace, more relaxed, more connected with nature and local traditions. This picturesque fishing village has captivated us with its simplicity, its serene waters, and the warmth of its people, making it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in an atmosphere of pure tranquility.
Upon arriving at Playa Puerto Ángel, the first thing that strikes us is the image of fishermen's boats gently rocking in the bay, a constant reminder of the essence of this place. Palm trees lean over the golden sand, inviting us to relax in their shade, while the soft murmur of the waves lulls us. It's a destination that embraces everyone: from families with young children looking for a safe place to play, to couples seeking romance and solo travelers yearning for peace and connection. Here, marine life is part of everyday life, and the freshness of seafood is a promise fulfilled at every beachfront restaurant. Without a doubt, Playa Puerto Ángel represents the quintessence of the most authentic and charming Oaxaca beaches.
How to Get to Playa Puerto Ángel
Getting to Playa Puerto Ángel is part of the adventure and, fortunately, there are several options to access this paradisiacal corner of the Oaxacan coast. We always recommend planning the trip in advance to ensure a hassle-free arrival.
If we are coming from Oaxaca City, the state capital, the journey can be a bit long but scenic. The most comfortable option is usually to take a bus line, like ADO, to Pochutla, the nearest city and an important transportation hub. From Pochutla, which is about 15-20 minutes from Puerto Ángel, we can take a shared taxi, a private taxi, or a 'camioneta' (a kind of local public transport) that will take us directly to the beach. The bus ride from Oaxaca can take between 7 and 9 hours, depending on the route and stops, but the mountain views make up for the time.
From other popular coastal destinations, such as Huatulco or Puerto Escondido, access is much faster and simpler. From Huatulco, to the east, we are about 45 minutes to an hour away by car or taxi. There are shared and private taxis available that frequently cover this route. If we are coming from Puerto Escondido, to the west, the journey is similar, also around 45 minutes to an hour, and the transportation options are the same. For those who prefer flexibility, renting a car at Huatulco (HUX) or Puerto Escondido (PMX) airport is an excellent option, giving us the freedom to explore the surroundings at our own pace. The coastal roads are generally safe and offer spectacular landscapes, making the journey an integral part of the experience at this wonderful Oaxaca beach.
The Sand and the Water
One of the aspects we love most about Playa Puerto Ángel is the perfect combination of its sand and its waters. The sand here is a soft golden hue, fine to the touch and very pleasant for walking barefoot. It's not the kind of sand that burns excessively in the sun or is difficult to clean; on the contrary, it's the kind that invites you to lay out a towel and simply enjoy the warmth and sea breeze. The main beach, and the small adjacent coves, are mostly composed of this sand, making it ideal for all ages and relaxing activities.
But if the sand is attractive, the water is simply sublime. The waters of Playa Puerto Ángel are famous for their tranquility and clarity. Being located in a protected bay, the waves are minimal, creating a perfect natural pool for swimming, especially for the youngest members of the family. The color of the water varies between turquoise and emerald tones, and its temperature is warm for most of the year, inviting us to dive in without hesitation. Underwater visibility is usually good, allowing for some snorkeling in some rocky areas near the ends of the beach, where the most colorful marine life hides. It is certainly a place where contact with the sea is a pure and rejuvenating experience, a distinctive characteristic of the best Mexico beaches for relaxation.
Services and Facilities
Although Playa Puerto Ángel retains a rustic and authentic fishing village charm, it does not lack the essential services that make our stay comfortable and pleasant. We have found that, despite not being a large resort destination, it offers everything needed to fully enjoy a day at the beach.
On the main beach, along the shore, we find a good number of chiringuitos and seafood restaurants. These establishments, mostly palapas with tables and chairs on the sand or on raised terraces, offer us everything from traditional breakfasts to full meals with the freshest fish of the day. Many of them also have umbrellas and sun loungers that we can use in exchange for buying something, which is an excellent option to protect ourselves from the sun and relax. Most of these chiringuitos also have bathrooms/WCs for their customers' use and, in some cases, offer basic showers to rinse off the sand and salt before returning to the hotel.
Regarding safety, during the high season and on weekends, there is usually a lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we are traveling with children. For those who arrive
