We venture into the heart of the Michoacán coast to discover a place that, for many, is synonymous with perfect waves and a total disconnect from urban bustle: Playa Nexpa. How to Get to Playa Nexpa

Getting to Playa Nexpa is part of the adventure and offers us the chance to appreciate Michoacán's diverse landscapes. The beach is located on the coast of the state of Michoacán, about 40 kilometers northwest of Lázaro Cárdenas, the region's largest port city. For us, the most common and flexible way to get there is by car. From Morelia, the state capital, the trip can take between 4 and 5 hours, taking federal highway 200 that runs along the coast.

If we're coming from the north, for example, from Manzanillo or Colima, we can also follow highway 200 south, passing through cities like Tecomán and Caleta de Campos before reaching Nexpa. The coastal highway is scenic, although some sections can be a bit winding, so we recommend driving carefully and enjoying the views. There is signage for Nexpa, but it's always useful to have a GPS or map. For those who prefer public transport, we can take a bus to Lázaro Cárdenas and, from there, look for shared taxis or combis that take us directly to the beach. This last leg can be a bit more complicated, but the reward of reaching this paradise is well worth it. It's important to remember that, being a destination with a more rustic atmosphere, transport options may be less frequent than in other more touristy beaches of Mexico, so planning ahead is key.

The Sand and Water

The sand of Playa Nexpa is, for us, one of its most distinctive and attractive features. We won't find the typical fine white Caribbean postcard sand here, but rather sand of a darker hue, ranging from gray to ochre, with a texture we could describe as mixed. It's a blend of fine and coarser grains, occasionally dotted with small stones polished by the constant pounding of the waves. This particularity gives it a natural charm and a different feel underfoot, a constant reminder of the Pacific's geological force.

As for the water, that of Playa Nexpa is the typical warm water of the Mexican Pacific, with pleasant temperatures for most of the year. However, what really defines Nexpa's water is its character. These are not calm, crystal-clear waters ideal for the carefree splashing of young children, but rather waters with constant and powerful surf, ideal for surfing. Currents can be strong, so, if we are not experienced surfers, we must take extreme precautions when swimming and always stay close to the shore. The water's clarity varies depending on sea conditions and the sediment it carries, but in general, it's clear enough to enjoy a refreshing swim after a surf session or simply to feel the ocean's energy. The combination of this unique sand and the powerful surf is what makes Playa Nexpa an unparalleled sensory experience.

Services and Facilities

For us, the services and facilities at Playa Nexpa reflect its authentic spirit and its focus on the natural experience and surfing. Let's not expect to find large hotel chains or shopping centers, but rather a set of essential amenities that complement its rustic atmosphere. Parking is generally informal, with spaces available along the access road or in areas designated by the small lodgings and restaurants. It's practical and, in most cases, free.

The gastronomic offering is concentrated in the chiringuitos and small local restaurants, known as 'enramadas', that line up near the beach. Here we can enjoy delicious dishes of fresh seafood, zarandeado fish, and authentic Michoacán cuisine. They are places with a particular charm, where simplicity combines with the quality of local products. Many of these establishments also offer basic bathrooms/WCs for customers. Furthermore, since Nexpa is a surf destination, we will easily find surf equipment rental services, from boards for beginners to those for more advanced surfers, and often also lessons for those wishing to start this exciting sport. The availability of formal showers is limited and is usually associated with the lodgings. In general, the services are functional and designed to meet the needs of visitors seeking an experience closer to nature, without great luxuries but with everything necessary to enjoy the beach of Michoacán.
