How to Get to Playa Yelapa

Getting to Playa Yelapa is, in itself, part of the adventure and what contributes to its charm as a 'hidden' place. Forget about cars and paved roads to the shore; here, the main mode of transport is the sea. The most common and picturesque way to access Yelapa is by taking a lancha (small boat) or a water taxi, which adds an element of excitement and exclusivity to our visit.

The most popular starting point is Puerto Vallarta. From the Los Muertos pier, we can find numerous lanchas and water taxis departing for Yelapa throughout the day. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on sea conditions and the type of vessel. During the trip, we enjoy spectacular views of the coast, with its green cliffs and other small coves dotting Banderas Bay. It is a fantastic opportunity to take photos and feel the sea breeze before setting foot on the sand of Playa Yelapa.

Another option, often more economical and with a shorter travel time (about 20-30 minutes), is to depart from Boca de Tomatlán. To get to Boca de Tomatlán from Puerto Vallarta, we can take a public bus on Basilio Badillo street or a taxi. Once in Boca, the pier is easily identifiable, and lanchas depart from there very frequently. This route is ideal if we are looking for a more local experience and want to shorten the time at sea.

It is important to remember that lancha schedules are usually more frequent in the morning and early afternoon. We always recommend checking return times in advance, especially if we are planning a day trip, so as not to get stranded in this idyllic corner. The last lancha back to Puerto Vallarta or Boca de Tomatlán usually leaves before nightfall, although there are always private water taxi options if more flexibility or a later return is desired, albeit at a considerably higher cost. The sea crossing is, without a doubt, an integral and memorable part of the experience at one of the best Mexico beaches.

The Sand and Water

Upon stepping onto the shore of Playa Yelapa, the first thing we notice is the quality of its sand. It is a soft golden color, incredibly fine and silky to the touch, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel every grain under our feet. Unlike other more crowded beaches, here the sand remains clean and pristine, contributing to that feeling of a virgin paradise. It is the perfect type of sand for laying out our towel and simply relaxing, or for the little ones to build sandcastles without difficulty.

The waters of Yelapa are another of its great attractions. They are remarkably crystal clear and of a beautiful turquoise color that blends with the deep blue of the ocean. Thanks to the protection of the bay, the waves are usually gentle and calm, making them ideal for swimming, especially for those who are not comfortable with strong currents. The water temperature is warm and pleasant for most of the year, allowing us to enjoy long swims without feeling cold. We, honestly, could spend hours floating in these waters, observing marine life or simply letting ourselves be carried away by the serenity of the surroundings. The underwater visibility is excellent, which also makes it an attractive place for snorkeling, allowing us to appreciate the rich marine biodiversity of this Jalisco beach.

Services and Facilities

Despite its remote nature, Playa Yelapa does not lack the essential services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay, while always maintaining that rustic and authentic touch that characterizes it. Do not expect large resorts or international chains; local businesses predominate here, which adds a special charm to the experience.

Restaurants and Chiringuitos

The beach is dotted with charming chiringuitos (beach bars) and palapa-style restaurants, where we can enjoy authentic local cuisine. These establishments offer tables and chairs directly on the sand, often under the shade of palm trees or thatched roofs, providing us with a relaxed and informal atmosphere. They are the ideal place to taste fresh seafood, zarandeado fish, ceviches, and other typical Mexican dishes, all while enjoying sea views. We always recommend trying the fresh fish of the day, which is usually caught by local fishermen. They also offer refreshing drinks, from natural coconuts to margaritas, perfect for comb
