How to Get to Playa Puerto Arista

Getting to Playa Puerto Arista is relatively straightforward, and the route itself is part of the adventure, offering us changing landscapes that prepare us for the coastal beauty. We recommend planning the trip in advance to ensure a hassle-free experience.

From Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Capital of Chiapas)

The most common way to get there is from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the state capital. From there, the journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours by car, covering a distance of about 160 kilometers. We take federal highway 190 towards Arriaga and then federal highway 200 towards Tonalá. Once in Tonalá, there is clear signage that will guide us to Playa Puerto Arista, which is about 18 kilometers from the municipal seat.

• By private car: This is the most comfortable and flexible option, allowing us to explore the surroundings at our own pace. Parking is available at the beach.
• By bus: From the Tuxtla Gutiérrez bus terminal, we can take a bus bound for Tonalá. Once in Tonalá, there are colectivos or taxis that will take us directly to the beach.

From Tapachula

If we are coming from the south, from Tapachula, the journey is a bit longer, approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to 4 hours by car, covering about 200 kilometers. We follow federal highway 200 northbound, passing through cities like Pijijiapan and Mapastepec, until we reach Tonalá and from there to Playa Puerto Arista.

From Other Points in Mexico

For those traveling from other parts of Mexico, the most practical option is usually to fly to the Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport (TGZ) in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and from there follow the directions mentioned. There are also flights to Tapachula International Airport (TAP), although it is a less common option for accessing this specific Chiapas beach.

The Sand and Water

One of the main attractions of Playa Puerto Arista is, without a doubt, its vast expanse of sand and the warmth of its waters. We were impressed by the breadth of the coast, which seems endless, offering plenty of space for all visitors.

The Sand

The sand here is a light golden color, very fine and soft to the touch. It's ideal for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the kids, or simply relaxing in the sun. Along its kilometers of extension, the beach maintains a uniform consistency, making it very comfortable for any activity. We won't find large rocks or pebbles in the main beach area, which contributes to its welcoming and safe atmosphere.

The Water

The Pacific waters at Playa Puerto Arista are notably warm, making them a delight for swimming any time of the year. The temperature is very pleasant, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a refreshing dip. Although it's an ocean beach, the waves are usually moderate in size, making it suitable for most swimmers. However, as with any Pacific beach, we always recommend being aware of currents and following lifeguard instructions. For the little ones, the shoreline is ideal for playing and splashing under adult supervision.

The water clarity can vary slightly depending on the time of year and weather conditions, but it's generally suitable for a pleasant swim. The vastness of the beach also ensures the water doesn't feel crowded, even in high season, giving us a sense of space and freedom that few Chiapas beaches can offer.

• Chiringuitos and restaurants: Along the beach, especially in the busier areas, we'll find a large number of palapas and restaurants serving delicious dishes of fresh seafood, fried fish, cocktails, and Mexican snacks. It's the perfect place to enjoy a meal with a sea view.
• Umbrellas and sun loungers: Most chiringuitos offer umbrella and sun lounger rentals, often with the purchase of food and drinks. This allows us to relax comfortably in the shade, protected from the Chiapas sun.
